...hooked my DVD to a new digital receiver/Surround Sound system last night and the Satellite picture is very bright. Used a S-Video cable from sat reveiver to surround receiver. Same with DVD player and TV set.

Ideas??

Does the receiver have its own remote?

What kind of receiver btw?

Same thing happened at work (we have a killer display set-up) and the remote settings all had to be adjusted one by one, color, conrast, etc etc.

Panasonic with own remote.

I figured as much. The sat was hooked to an analog surround system b-4.

it probably has some preamp that is cranking up the values.
you can pay someone from a local cable repair shop and they can tune it for you pretty cheap - look in the phone book. it is a hassle b/c you have to be there with them...

if you can access the menus that allow you to control the various settings, you might be able to do it yourself - but I know that the places here (esp with the big screen tvs) have a tool that suctions onto the screen and does it all

Scrapp - I also noticed that the Sub-woofer I already had doesn't seem to make a difference in sound quality whether it is plugged in or not plugged in. ??

that's weird... does it have a seperate preamp that has a vol control - I had one that used to "not work" then saw that it had its own control that I had to manipulate.

also, have you tried it without any of the other speakers on?
the way the human brain recognizes bass, it can't distinguish direction from it - so if you have the treble going on other speakers, regardless of where in the room your subwoofer is, it will sound like to you the deep sounds are coming from the smaller tweeter speakers.... weird brain trick.
this is why it doesn't matter where in the room you position the subwoofer - even under the couch.

if you turn off the other speakers, you can at least check that it is working.

No. The volume control for the sub is on the sub itself.

True - I noticed the bass coming from the small surround speakers instead of the front or center speaker.

I'll check on that. Thanks.

I've got the input from the sub inserted into the slot labelled sub on the receiver itself. My sub also has those wire connections on the outside of it like the connections on the receiver for the smaller speakers.

hmm - I'd assume it is a one or the other sort of thing and you don't need to do both.
the sub on receivers sometimes has an extra preamp in there - and then sometimes the sub themselves have the amp - so be careful not to distort the sound or worse yet blow the speaker... heh heh, blow.

1) I'm jealous that you have this stuff
2) I'm jealous that you are home playing with it
3) I've exhausted my limited speaker knowledge :)

yes.
I'm doing other people's work while they are on vacation, and then when I get back after new years I get laid off!!! yay!

I feel a lot like the dog in the gary larson (far side) cartoon that is leaning out the window and yelling to his friend that he's "going to the vet to get tutored!" and all excited...
