City Council OKs request allowing Islamic call to prayer over loudspeaker

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. (AP) -- The City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to allow a mosque to send out a call to prayer to Muslims on a loudspeaker.

The Bangladeshi al-Islah mosque asked for permission to air the Arabic call to prayer via loudspeakers five times a day, though it compromised by agreeing not to air the call before 6 a.m. or after 10 p.m.

Some Muslims say the call is the equivalent of church bells. Opponents argued that church bells have no religious significance and that allowing the Arabic call, which lasts less than two minutes, unfairly elevates Islam above other religions.

When I lived in Woodley Park, you could hear the calls when the wind blew just right over Rock Creek Park.

LOL, then you would have loved Turkey. I was stationed there, and heard the calling to prayers all the time. It got to the point to where I thought they were interesting and cool.

I wanted to fire off a few rounds at the drum player during Ramadan. That bastard would walk through the neighborhood, beating his drum at 3am to wake everybody up so they could eat before sunrise.

He deserved the full wrath of an M-16 on semi-auto, and some carefully thrown hand grenades.
