Odd Injury - Any Ideas?

About 5 days ago, doing legs.

Finish squats no problem. Go on to do leg press, and on the third set something strange happened.

The weight wasn't heavy - about what I could hit for 12 reps. I go knees to shoulders on leg press, and at the very bottom of the rep, as I started to press the weight up, I heard a small pop from the right side of my ribcage and some pain.

There is no bruising or swelling, but when I contract my core, bend over, or put pressure on the right side of my ribcage, I get a sharpish pain. I had to skip legs today, because when I tried to do a squat motion, with no weight at all, I thought better of trying to force my way through it. The last thing I want to do is injure it badly and be out of commission for longer than I have to be.

Anyone have any idea what in the hell this might be? I'm hoping by next leg day that it will be gone, but it feels exactly the same as it did 5 days ago, no better and no worse.

Could have popped some cartiledge, cracked a rip, torn and intercostal, or a couple of other things. See if it feels better in a couple of days, if it doesn't go get it checked out.

So I'm assuming no point in going to a doctor, which I prefer not to do anyways.

Think there's any danger in continuing to lift?

And doesn't it seem kinda f'ed up to be able to crack a rib from lifting... if that's what it is, that kind freaks me out.

If you can lift without pain then go for it, if not wait until you feel better.

It's actually a pretty common injury due to the strain in that area while lifting.

You might also go to see a chiro...in case its just out of place. I had to have one put back into place a while back. The adjustment stung like a *itch - but then it felt better.

Worried about the pop though. Like others said, it may have cracked. Hell - I knew a girl who cracked a rib just from a really bad cough. It can happen. By the way, be careful (in case) you wear a belt when doing leg press and possibly have it pressing into your rib cage. I have a short torso, so this can be a problem sometimes for me. Take care and good luck.

My guess is that you don't have a cracked rib, but you "popped a rib out" as my chiro friend puts it. It's happened to me and it hurts like hell. When it gets put back into place, it hurts like hell, as well, but then it took me about 2 days for it to feel better after the adjustment. If you know a good chiro, I'd go see him (her).

Thanks for the advice guys. Thing still hurts like a bitch, been hammering down the advil and lifting through it. I dread doing chins today.

If it ain't better by the end of the weekend, I'll get it checked out.

It sounds like a cracked rib...I had one before, nothing you can do but let it heal. You'll know hwat NOT to do when it hurts...and it hurts real bad. Just takes time to heal, nothing you can do.

How's the rib/chest doing? Did you get it checked or has it just sorted itself out?

Hey Blut - It was really strange how this thing worked out. The weekend after this post, it got a lot worse. I couldn't even sleep on it, I would wake up about every hour or so.

Talked to a physical therapist whose office is next to my gym. She said that many time a rib will dislocate and immediately pop back into place. The ribs on my right side were swollen and she said to give it another week, and if it hadn't recovered to get an x-ray.

That Monday, it was like the pain was just gone. Was able to hit squats again, but I'm still a little to freaked to jump on the leg press again. It still gets a little sore when doing abs or squatting, but its worlds better than it was.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
