observations from yesterday (racist)

rebuilding, getting there
Platinum
I went to McSmurfy's yesterday to return a movie to the RedBox kiosk there, it's the closest one to my place.

On the way there's a ''daily pay'' temp jobs place. Every single person out front of that place was white, middle aged, and drinking what appeared to be coffee.

When I got to McSmurfy's I was approached by two people to give them some change... neither were white.

I dont fucking get it. Nearly all the time someone in my neighborhood asks for change(for a hamburger or bus money), it's a black bum. It's very seldom a white person, or a hispanic person. There's a hispanic woman who lives a couple buildings over from me who works at mcdonalds. A lot of the time if I'm out riding my bike in the morning I see her walking to work.

Dunno what I'm really getting at, but these disparities seem to replicate themselves on a daily basis.

I only read the first post.
Here's my experience.
Every week I am approched by people for money too.
Change for food or the bus or a cigarette.
It is always 100% of the time a white person. 95% of the time a female.
maybe it depends on where you live or maybe white chicks are lazy and prefer to beg for money instead of getting a damn job.

ever run into a nice hobo???? that doesn't ask for anything but when you try and offer them something they'll refuse it... kinda odd but whatever.

In knoxville the day laborers are either mexican or white usually.

As far as bums tho, I see a lot of white and black bums -- probably about 80/20 split too, but that probably reflects the poorer downtown demographic as well.

I've never seen an Asian bum.

lol so true... hmm maybe because they don't lose their homes because the whole damn family lives together and helps pay the bills. :)

I returned some movies there again today, RedBox has a shitty selection and they suck.

Again, outside of the temp place, all white guys. No bums approached me today, but again it was all white people at the day laborer place.

in my part of town it's the "gutterpunks" (well spoken, darkly dressed, hygene challenged, pierced and tattooed white kids with yankee accents) that TRY to panhandle money or cigs off people.

one quick right-to-left headshake and a frown from my rayban aviator sunglasses clad face and they move on...rather quickly at that. :Manny:

my bartender friends tell me that if they cannot panhandle a cig or drink that they will wip out daddy's charge card and purchase what they want.....

When I lived in Cincy, most of the bums were white -- same in Miami, FL.

I dunno.

ugh, no way! gaud knows whats lurking inside the mouths of some of those gutterpunks... :worried:

the ghetto thugs around here take one quck glance at me and assume i'm a cop, so they don't bother me. (or so i am told...what a joke....that would be like having the fox guard the hen house.....)

I used to work store security in the ghetto. There was an even mix of degenerates among the whites/black's/Hispanics. No Asians.
Native Americans = 100% scum. There was never a Indian that I didn't eventually have to throw out for begging, stealing, urinating, ect. The real fucked up part is if I needed to call the police for something serious, the local city cops had to turn them over to the reservation police (for non felonies) which was always a relative of the scum involved.

There's a guy who hangs out outside of the CVS down the street from my condo asking people to buy him food...I used to do it every time, but now the guy looks at me and sees a cash cow so I felt like I had to stop doing it or he was going to be there every time I stopped in (which I do frequently). The last two times I turned him down and it completely broke my heart. I kind of feel like sitting down with him and trying to get him to go to a shelter/work program or something.

I'm too soft hearted for my own good.

I'm not saying every Indian is a worthless drunk. My mistake if that's the way it was taken.
I'm saying every Indian on the corner of Lake Mead and Las Vegas BLVD is a worthless drunk.
At my present position there's a Navajo girl that has never had a drop of booze in her life. Then she doesn't hang out in the ghetto...

I've seen people around my area always in the same place begging, the same people for years - you would think if they weren't getting enough money to live on they would move somewhere else. Then I see them in line buying booze or cigarettes instead of food like they are begging for. It hardens your heart pretty quickly.

Everyone in TO knows the story of the shaky lady who it turned out was living in quite a nice place with a car but was begging every day.

Asians don't beg. They work because they have the proper work ethic from birth.

When your observations are attacked as "broad sweeping generalisations / xenophobic / racist / bigoted etc" you're supposed to retort with how; all of your friends are native Americans, you are the Godfather to several Native American children, you help maintain an ancient Indian burial ground during your weekends off, make tenuous claims to native American heritage etc. You are part of an active apologist organisation for repressing them etc.

In situations such as that, what you have to ask yourself is, "What would Patrick Bateman do?" and thus act accordingly.

The US has too many ghettos.
Up in Canada, we don't have ghettos. I live in one of the largest cities in Canada and we don't have one ghetto.
When I was in Philly, My friend drove me around and I was shocked when I saw all the ghettos. Then she took me to Camden and told me to lock the car doors.

Why does the US have so many ghettos?

You live in TO right? We have ghettos, you just have to look to find them. Regent Park and the government housing area around Lawrence and Allen come to mind. Moss Park is also not a great area and that's not even taking parts of Scarborough and Brampton into account.

The difference is here in Canada we tolerate way too much - you have crack houses operating in nice areas because people won't do anything about it. Our laws are too lenient and don't even get me started on our immigration policy.

I'm like that with kids only. I can't help but give my money but with adults that's different. No problem in telling them to get a job. Was working before, I was of legal age, so I expect an adult to work too. No exceptions here.

No she is in Montreal.

but yah we do have ghettos in Toronto aka "housing projects"
Regent Park for sure.
River Street where the ATM guys get a police escort at the corner store LOL

We have one urban outdoorsman who seems to have a busted alternator belt every day for the past six months.

i am with MrPlunkey. It seems that the ratio is similar to the demographic of the neighborhood you are in. Post-Katrina we have been deluged with them. Thinking of packing up five school buses and returning the to the Big Easy.

Well Even the "ghetto's" of TO are lame compared to the ones I saw in Philly or the ones my friend tells me about in Detroit.

I feel very safe in TO and felt zero safe when I walked around the burbs of Philly.

I think it's safe to say us whites made some bad decisions when building this country.

Your right, that's a huge generalization.......but on some reservations, that's a picture perfect description of their lives unfortunately.....

1) I doubt my heart will ever harden to it. You're talking to a girl who, at the age of five, befriended the homeless lady who "lived" on our corner because, as I told my mom, "Everyone should have a friend." I stayed friends with her till she was gone one day about a year later. Even recently, there was a schitzophrenic (spelling?) homeless man who hung out nearby work...I'd take him to chipotle now and then and let him ramble. I think he appreciated the company more than he did the food - but in contrast to CVS guy, there's virtually no chance of this guy ever being self sufficient. He had a church he stayed at and I think he got some meals with their soup kitchen, but the man had absolutely checked out to lunch upstairs.

I'll always have a soft spot for the people who find themselves in that position. In my experience many are mentally handicapped somehow, many don't have any family, almost all are trapped in an addiction of some sort (something I can relate to), and many have just given up and resigned themselves to that life. I realize my compassion for the homeless is unusual, but I doubt anything could change it. I suppose my own battles with addiction (my ED) make me more understanding of how low said addiction can take you. I never would have made it without my friends and family, and as mentioned before...many of these people never had that support.

2) I NEVER give money. EVER. Only food.

In India the mentally ill are considered gifted and they are regularly given food, shelter etc.

I agree with #2. They will (not all though) spend it on booze or drugs.

Same here. Most bums I have seen have been white. Went to Daytona last December and I bet there were 20 guys living on the streets, only 2 or 3 were black.
