Obese Children

So I am starting a non profit for obese children. This is a big step as I am already a busy person. While at Disney World recently I couldn't help but notice the vast amount of really overweight kids. The parents were a pillar of lard so I can only assume that the bad genes or in most cases poor eating habits were passed onto the kids. For the most part these children cannot help the fact they are obese.

I want to educate parents on how to eat better and teach their children how to eat better. Up here in Michigan, the 5th or 6th fattest state, you can't walk 5 feet in a store without seeing a large person.

Any thoughts on a good company name for here in Michigan?

This is a serious thread. K to those who actually help.

My "little" brothers got a weight problem. He's 14. My dad gets all pissed when someone brings up his weight.
He'll do stuff like butter both sides of his bread, with A LOT of butter. The kid has never taken a PE class cause he's home schooled. Mostly he plays vids.

It's pretty freakin sad.

Parents pass overinduldgence to their kids. It wont do any good to tell a kid to eat lean meat and whole grains if they are going to still stuff themselves with it until they are about to pop and then let them have a cheat meal and their stomach is so streched out from all the healthy food they can now eat 10,000 cals in a sitting.

I dont think our version of healthy is going to work on a kid.

I wish that the US would stop riding the "bad genetics train". You don't see this number of obese people any place else in the world.

I dont know what I can tell you to help you as you have SUCH an uphill battle ahead of you.

Here in TX as soon as peeps find out that I used to be a certified personal trainer they all want me to train them. My Old Grump would even volunteer my services until they all learned that the first rule was, "You gotta quit drinking for AT LEAST a month."

*This is the part where you hear the needle scratch the record*

"DO WHAT NOW?!?!!?" "Can't I just cut back a little?"

So then I go and try to explain how negatively alcohol effects the body's metabolism and it is like *deer in headlights*.

So now.... NO ONE asks me to train them anymore as NO ONE wants to quit drinking for 30 stinking days. And that is alcohol - NOT FOOD. How do you think these people are going to feel about you telling them to change their eating habits?!? And God forbid - THEY HAVE TO MOVE AROUND!!!

I don't know what to tell you. I find it as criminal as you and also believe that this is out and out child abuse but how can you get into peoples' homes and their lifestyles when they are STILL teaching the freaking food pyramid in school?

As for the name.... I wouldnt put any emphasis on the negative, instead try and emphasize the positive. Something like Fit Kids...

Sorry I couldnt help you out much.

agree that most of the parents enable the kids to be fat asses just like them

Enable?

How bout TEACH!

How is it the fault of a 5 y/o that he/she is obese? Even most 17 y/o dont fully understand the cause/effect relationship between food and their metabolism, now throw in an unhealthy and blatant disregard for any sort of physical activity.... Hell, I would venture to say that 98% of the adult population is TOTALLY CLUELESS when it comes to basic nutrition and biology. I am not talking that loooooooooooooong chemical equation by which your body utilizes energy - the ATP equation LOL... but VERY VERY VERY basic stuff.

Every single person that I encountered in my time as a certified fitness professional was 100% CLUELESS about how their body metabolized food.

All great points, but I think you are really missing the point. I am not looking for reasons to not try and do this. Believe me, I have heard them all already. I think what separates a good entrepreneur from a bad one is the desire to move forward regardless of what other people who are too lazy to fight the issues will tell them.

Not saying anyone here is lazy, but the spirit of the post was more to find a good name.

I do know what to expect. Parents are the driving factor for most children being obese. Lazy parents equal lazy kids. Pretty simple formula if you ask me. That is why I said I want to help educate the parents as well.

One more thing...by teaching kids to create and meet attainable goals will only help them with other aspects of life. A child that works toward and accomplishes something will come out the other end with a renewed sense of feeling good about themselves. Hopefully some of those feelings will stay with them and develop into a more confident person.

Kudos to you for that!

I hope you are a tremendous success. Every single one of my clients was VERY appreciative when our time was up. It was a job that I did enjoy as I felt I was instrumental in helping people.

Good luck to you!!!! :)

. . .if it's truly going to be a non-profit organization (i.e., you're gonna file Form 1023 and get exempt status from the IRS), don't use some "business" sounding name like "fit-for-life" and don't use the word "corporation" in it. . .trust me. . .you'll get a lot smoother ride down the road to exempt status. . .use a name like The Western Michigan Forum on Childhood Obesity. . .also, get a good business plan in place that discusses how the organization intends to fulfill its charitable purpose, where funds will come from, how the organization will help relieve the government of some responsibility, etc, etc. . .if you have a small business development center associated with a local university, they will usually help you put your business plan together for free. . .they may even have an inside track to government dollars that can be used to help fund the organization's activities. . .

Great points digi...thanks! I am in the very early discovery phase here. I am still doing a ton of research. Good thing is I have a friends who are in the gym business, nutrition and personal training. I plan to absorb alot of info from them and draw on my own experiences. I hear the exempt status can be really tricky.

A quick search for 'Fat Kid' on youtube shows why there's always going to be a need for obese children. Don't deprive the other kids of their fun.

i agree, i think its child abuse for sure

This might sound odd, but if you get kids to play this game you will see huge results.

It's not for everyone, but if you get kids hooked on it their metabolism and fat loss will sky rocket.

b0und (let's D-D-R)

While partly a joke, you are somewhat right. I have watched my daughter and wife do that dance thing and it is hard. I obviously have a ton of research left to do, but the point of getting kids active again has everything to do with their desire to perform an activity. If games like these are entertaining to a kid it makes it a whole lot easier to get into losing weight.
