> NEW YORK CITY POLICE COMMISSIONER RAYMOND W. KELLY AND SPECIAL NARCOTICS PROSECUTOR BRIDGET G. BRENNAN ANNOUNCE CLOSURE OF TWO NIGHTCLUBS IN MANHATTAN ON CHARGES OF ONGOING ILLEGAL "DESIGNER" DRUG ACTIVITIES
>
New York City Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly and Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan today announced the closure of two large nightclubs in Manhattan on charges of ongoing illegal drug activities. The Sound Factory, at 616-620 West 46th Street, and Exit, at 610 West 56th Street, were closed on Friday, February 7, by order of the New York State Supreme Court. These closing orders are subject to modification by the court.
>
> "The New York City Police Department is combatting the illegal narcotics trade everywhere in our city – not only in the streets, but also in nightclubs," said Commissioner Kelly. "Our detectives did a terrific job throughout this investigation. Thanks to their hard work, we are sending a clear message to nightclub owners: If you allow illegal drugs to saturate your business and endanger your patrons, we'll shut you down."
>
> Special Narcotics Prosecutor Brennan said: "Most of those we are prosecuting are college students who seemed to have no preciation of the legal consequences to themselves or the harm that their distribution of the drugs brought to their customers. The special treatment they received in the exclusive areas of the clubs enhanced their sense that they could conduct criminal business with impunity."
>
> Both nightclubs have been the scene of numerous narcotics crimes, usually involving illegal "designer" drugs, such as Ecstasy (methylenedioxy methamphetamine or MDMA) and Special K (ketamine). In Exit, undercover detectives not only purchased drugs easily, they also observed many club patrons using them in the open. In other incidents, detectives purchased benign substances that the sellers claimed were illegal drugs, a common ploy used by narcotics dealers to defraud naive drug buyers.
>
> The nightclub was previously the subject of a nuisance abatement action, in September 2000. After extensive negotiations with the club owners at that time, Exit was allowed to operate after club management agreed to institute numerous anti-drug policies, including hiring an independent private-sector inspector general, or IPSIG, to monitor and report on club activities. The IPSIG agreement covered a nine-month period, from October 2001 to June 2002.
>
> At the Sound Factory, the larger nightclub with a capacity of more than 1,400 people, undercover detectives purchased Ecstasy, Special K, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana. During the investigation, drug use by patrons was clearly in the open. In fact, on Jan. 26, 2003, a 19-year-old woman overdosed and was removed from the club in an unconscious state. The Sound Factory was also temporarily closed by
nuisance abatement order on April 30, 1999.
>
> This investigation was initiated by the Narcotics Division of the New York City Police Department and the investigation was assisted
> by the office of the Special Narcotics prosecutor and the NYPD's Civil Enforcement Unit. The Civil Enforcement Unit secured nuisance abatement closing orders against 649 locations across the city in 2002, for charges including illegal narcotics, gambling, ostitution, auto crime, stolen property, alcohol beverage control law, and trademark infringement offenses.
>
> Eleven defendants are being prosecuted for drug sales inside the clubs by the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor.

Exit in Chicago is a Biker bar... they have fetish nights and lots of "alternative" grundge/hard punk people there... usually see about 30-40 Harleys outside there on any weekend night.

I was told factory will be opening next friday. Thats what it said on their website. They also closed down arena in new rochelle westchester. Probably for alcohol consumption by minors. Factory is also starting factory friday's next week.
---PEACE---Mad Max

Yeah, it makes sense. Exit had a weird vibe going the last month or so. A lot of the regulars were not around, and I had some strange interactions with people who did not look like club goers. Last friday night this one dude (22ish looking) who looked totally out of place came up to me and asked for some goodies. I told him I don't have any, but if he waited longer most likely he would be approached. So he like, "well how long??" Then he was getting all pushy for me to find someone to "help" him. Then I got pissed (and it takes a lot to get me pissed) so I took him aside and explained to him that it was in his best interest to go away. Another incident like that happened to me the previous week too.

This happens every couple of years. It will blow over in a week or so. Last time I remember they shut down the factory was in 99 I believe when that girl dropped dead in the middle of the dance floor. Just doing it to keep the peace, but will be back very soon. They cannot stop it but can only try to contain it...perception is reality...

I agree...

i heard from one of the narcotic agents whoc losed sf & exit that there doen forever(hes one of my best friends - not a stranger). i said the same thjing that they will be open next week * all he said to me was that what everybody said about twilo, tunnell & the old limelight. they had a 18 month investigation in both clubs buying from bouncers & dealers. he said they also bought drugs in front of one of the owners(phoenix group owns sf).

HE SAID THERE DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it all depends on exactly how much they have on the clubs. If they can prove that the owners/management of either one were in any way connected to or endorced/tolerated the sale or use of anything in the club they are done, end of story.

BUT- as it stands right now, factory (as far as i know, and by looking at those pics it seems to back it up) only has been closed with a 'abatement act' which basicly closes a venue until a set court date (which is this thursday for exit and factory) or at least thats what my sources at the NYPD say.

NOW, on the other hand, Exit was served with the same abatement action that factory got, but also got a restraining order placed on the entire premesis that prevents even the owners from entering the building and removing anything from inside. Hence why the press conference for announcing all of this was held outside exit at 8PM on friday nite. I didnt hear about any of this until it hit the news that nite cause i was out all day otherwise i would have attended the press conference and would have a lot more info to pass along. Rumor has it that they are also investigating Exit on charges of Tax Evasion (that might explain the order preventing the owners from removing anything--like their financial records...)

It seems like out of all of this, exit is going to take the big fall. When i first called the NYPD press office that nite when i heard about all this they didnt even mention factory at all to me, after i heard about it later on i had to call back and he had to really dig to find the press release (there were about 4 different versions of it) that had the info on factory on it.

about two months ago i was sittin downstiars on the benches by the bar on the main floor with my gurl waiting for some ppl to come down and meet us when the red room closed and some woman (had to have been about 38 or so, but dressed like a 22 year old slut) came up and asked if i had anything to sell, i said no, she asked if i was rolling (had a bad feeling and didnt trust her) so i said no, and she just kept it up then goin over and askin my gurl (was was mangled) if she was on anything and if she had an 'extra pill to sell' or if we knew where to get some in the club - i'm pretty sure my gurl even said 'what the fuck are you a cop, you look mad old' lol of course she said no, but then she was hanging around by the bars downstairs for the rest of the nite, flurting with the guy bartender there for about 40 minutes (who knows what they were talking about or what he may have told her).

Another nite about 4 weeks ago i was there and all of a sudden about 10 cops swarm down on this one kid throw cuffs on him and drag him away, then proceded to hang out downstairs by the main bar for about a half hour and finally left.

lol, yeah its funny cause they have no idea what to say. i've had a similar interview myself. "are you rolling?"..WTF!! anyone with the slightest club experience has a good idea whats up. there are so many tell-tale signs. i find that undercovers give off a nervous vibe (tend to talk and probe too much) and end up being pushy. i swear i was about to punch that one dude in the teeth. maybe the good ones have little more tatic with their approach. bernie let me know where you are going to party now (bye bye exit :( , i think you will probably recognize me if we meet up. --john

The owner of Exit probably had to shut the club down due to the abundant smell of Beef Lo Mein and Won Ton Soup with all the chinks that fucking place had!

i lived in sf every weekend, i seriously do not remember the last weekend i was not in attendance. if sf doesnt re open my life is going to change drastically. grrrrrrrr

candle lighting vigil outside sf tonight 10pm, we're gonna stand outside light candles, rail lines off the steps, and sing the words to gay straight and in ur eyes.

I bet JP wishes he had a set of balls and went through with buying the Limelight and opening his own joint. Pressure from SF owners got him week in the knees and look at him now. Sometimes you got to take a few steps backwards to move significantly foward...

i went to sf pretty much every sunday and im kinda glad its closed. i had plans to go sunday so i was kinda pissed it wasnt opened but once i counted my money yesterday and saw how much im gonna save by not goin I got over it real quick. i think i kinda want sf to blow up anyway after what i went through on jps b-day

i guess SF and EXIT aren't gonna be better than every club in America this coming weekend huh...................you guys didn't call it crackfactory for nothing

wanna hear somehting funny- I stopped by SF on my drive home on sunday nite from work to get some of my own pics of the place and the sign was torn off the grate...Mags do you have a new wall decoration ? lol

this is a HUGE blow to not only NYC's club scene, but the club scene in general. i think it really sucks that both places got shut down, and really hope that at least SF re-opens soon. a lot of people, including myself go to these clubs as a release from their weekly routines.... i love factory, and i always had a good time at Exit. the music was the draw, and the energy was the addiction.
IF factory opens its doors this weekend, Im gonna be there with bells on -- who's with me??? :D

MS tony ill be there... Im looking forward the place should be packed, ill be going late and closing it downlike usual. I cant imagine how strict securiys going to be.Good thing im going sober
:p .

I have been going to Factory for about 4 years....and i remember first going there and there was a Vibe like no place in the world, and i have partied in alot of places, the crowd's attitude was unmatched and the music was something to experience. And in my experience in the last 2 years Factory has changed DRAMITICALLY the crowd change, the vibe changed, shit i even think JP music isn't the same. I was saying this way before they closed down, it just seems now that i read the paper and see that it was a "22 month investigation" that just seemed exactly when the crowd changed, and with them went the vibe....2 years ago. I mean i still love the occasional Sunday Morning at SF but in my opinion the REAL SF died 2 years ago anyway. I have MANY friends that were there since it fucking opened, and ALL feel the same way.

Everything comes to an end...Studio54, and now its time to say good by to the one and only ....SoundFatory, Cracktory, K-fatory...

Just my opinion...
