Not sure if I should have killed this snake...

Came within a couple inches if stepping on a 4 1/2 foot snake a few minutes ago. I inspected it closely and found no rattles but the tail quivered about 1/2 the time. I touched the tail and it whirled with lightning speed but did not bite.

I think it is a bull snake which look somewhat like rattlers. I let it go...snakes are cool if they are not venemous.

What what you have done?

In my days of lawn and landscape it is something like this...

X - 12 (estimated)
Snakes - 0

I only ixnayed the aggressive ones.

I only kill snakes that I recognize as poisonous, and I know the
5 regional ones by sight..

Others I let go

I see snakes all the time here in Oklahoma.

I usually let them go. . . .

This state is loaded with poisonous snakes: ( rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths in the southern portion of the state).

Rat snakes and bull snakes are mean as hell.

If the snake attempts to attack me. . .I will kill it. . .most of the time they slither away, so I leave them alone.

If the snake is poisonous and overly aggressive then kill it. Otherwise, live and let live is my motto. Remember, with great power comes great responsibility.;)

Poisonous snakes never bother anyone. 90% of snake bites from rattlers are to the hand/wrist... i.e., some idiot was screwing with the snake.

Why would you kill a snake that's not attacking you? I don't see the point in killing the beast if it's just going along its merry way; if it's life threatning, fine. If the thing is looking like it's about to bite your nuts off, great, defend yoursel Otherwise, just admire it and let it go.

It lives here, it was sunning itself on the front porch last week. It could easily be stepped on with poor results if venemous.

Your reading comprehension appears to be a little questionable.

put it in one of the things that makes hjot dog links and grind a pound of it alive......snakes are demons, didnt u guys now that? evil creatures

I'd understand it's been hanging out there for a week if you had been writing it in your post; my reading comprehension is fine, thanks.

You sir have some very interesting stastistics at hand. It is very easy to step on rattlers if one does a great deal of hiking so I think it is OK to get rid of venomous snakes in somewhat populated areas.

Sister got bit by a rattler in her garage, bit her big toe. Hurts like hell.

My uncle was bitten by a copperhead while he was fishing along a river.

He damn near lost his leg from the poison. . .he has lost nerve function in his foot.

Copperheads blend into the environment.

I try not to kill animals at all costs, doesn't include annoying insects....Buddhist belief that one must share life/living with others, except for when they annoy the heck out of me and i have to squash it with a newspaper or my foot!!!!!!! But i do swerve to avoid squirrels, turtles, and sometimes ducks on the road.

Right on.

You should be able to tell the difference between a pit viper and a harmless snake anyway, man. C'mon.

But hell, even if it had been a rattler, why kill it?

I would have thrown my hands in the air, screamed loudly, and ran as far as I could...

I 'might' have come back with my 12g Shotgun...
