who do you think ends up paying for bums on the street since your state can't turn down anyone for healthcare? think the hospital just eats it? no they bill the state and the state pays for it from taxes. your taxes.

i go out and work hard and pay for insurance and a fortune in taxes. got no sympathy for people that expect the world to pay their way.

I didnt feel like reading through 5 pages, so heres my two cents since i happen to work in a hospital ER..

First off they cant turn you down for anything..its against the EMTALA law. They can send you to another hospital though or discharge you without treatment but only after a DR assessment.

Most hospital are not for profit, which means they do not pay taxes...because of this they are expected to write off large amounts of money the majority of it from ER visits because most people use them for head aches and tummy aches.

If it hurts and you need treatment hit the ER..they have to set up payment plans for you. And if you really cant afford it, they have charity applications.

Listen.. just don't pay the bill..they don't mess up your credit and it is federal law they can't deny someone for inability to pay.

try giving them a fake SS#...again..they can send u bill after bill if u don't pay there's nothing they can do.

Been there when i was 18, trust me.

I usually agree with you Kab, but thats horrible. Just because you *can* get away with it doesn't mean you should. Somebody ALWAYS ends up paying the bill. My state (tx) loses shitloads of money from the hospitals each year, due to Illegal Immigrants doing this.

It does effect your credit when they sue you and garnish your check...its so much easier to just acknowledge the bill and set up plans or try to get them to write it off..than ignore it and hide...I mean the hospital HAS to write off money to charity in order to get the tax break from your state..

friend just went to the er last month here in tampa florida...

for juandice toxic liver hepatitis the emegency room bill was 400 credit card before he left then he got a 2000$ follow up bill and docotrs fees with xrya cost and blood work that was one night in the er then he went to the hospital

the hospital for 3 days that was 4500$ all they did was pump him with fluids and detox him..becuase of the toxic hepatitis
then sent him home with some meds .

so 8 k total ... but they have a cash pay option if you have no insurance and you pay with in 1 week they give you a half price discount so it was only 4k out of pocket...
did have the option payment plans but it was the full price of 8k...
they know they will never get paid by over half the people and it goes to collections.. thats why they offer such a deep discount of you pay it all at one time before a week

that was a private hospital...

he waited 9 hours and tampa general and could not bee seen ... they dont take people fast unless your on a stretcher next to death .. that bill prob would have only been like 1500$ but he just could not wait anylonger at the county hospital.. tons of welfare and bums in the er trying to get free medicade treatment...

so he had to pay triple but the private hospital memeorial as soon as he walked in within 20 minutes he was seen at 1 am and on a table with Iv's in each arm

I worked for a vet before I was a paramedic----> med school,later. The vet laughed about that all the time. U can get a 2 weeks worth of antibiotics for about 5 bucks ..... if u buy them at tha pet store.
