Nightshift

New member
These next couple of weeks are going to suck major nuts because I will be working a nightshift of 11pm-7:30am starting Monday. Anyways, it's been a long time since I have worked a shift like that and would like advice on how to make the transition of training my body to sleep during the day again. Maybe someone like Decem could answer my question.

I just had to go through this last week. Pick one day which I call "hell day." Stay up all fucking night. Hit a 24 hr. gym, hit bars, chill with a buddy, play on the computer but DON'T SLEEP. Then, in the morning, crash like a 747, for the rest of the day. Repeat till you begin work. It'll suck at first but the body adjusts.

I know I can't make myself sleep at all. The other thing that bothers me is it screws up my eating, sleeping patterns, and training all up. All I have to say is thank God for Adderall! :)

68GT350 so your saying stay up for 24 hrs and then sleep for 24 hours? That don't sound to good therre buddy.

I did this a few years ago in school. I slept each day 4-10pm. I lost weight cos no way could I shovel down food at 4 am, it feels gross. Melatonin works at resetting the body clock at the weekends, kava lava is good to relax the mind.

Tape tin foil over the windows and block out all light. Get lots and lots of foam ear plugs, its fucking NOISY during the day and I lived on the main drag for cop cars, ambulances and fire engines.

What the hell are you working at anyway? I was a security guard. The ultimate for people looking for jobs that don't involve any work. I got plenty of zzz on the clock.

no no no...stay up for 24 hours and sleep for 8. For instance, wake up normally at 9am, right? Then stay up all day and night and go to bed at 9am the next day or even a little earlier. Get your 8 hours and you'll be set.

Well, I work at the check in and checkout warehouse for Arrowhead. I'm going to be stocking and doing inventory at night, while you all sleep.

Oh I use Melatonin with Valeriana powder to sleep now.......the sad thing is I wake up in two hours. The only thing that works is G but I don't want to go that route.

Too much Melatonin. The smallest effective amount is the best, you may have to split the tabs you have.

No drugs...no caffeine. You'll have a dependency.

Exactly thats what I am afraid of having a dependency on drugs. I am a firm believer in not using but letting the the other fools have the habit.

How dose one split Melatonin in 3mg tabs? Maybe I should just split the tab in half. Damn I am getting all worked up and Mondays not even here yet.

3 mgs is for old people. Just score it and break it. It's not as small as an arimidex or something and doesn't have to be exact.

Poor baby. I will give you some of my gray karma.

I suggest you take a sleeping pill in the beginning.

Ive been doing shift work in a plastic plant now for 16yrs.12hr shift.8am to 8pm and 8pm to 8am shifts.I never had a problem sleeping, just make sure your in a dark room and try turning a fan on.White noise helps. And yes working shift work really sucks when trying to work out. There are no 24 hr gyms were I'm from so if i work 8am to 8 pm i have until 10pm to work out. Then when I'm working nights 8pm to 8am i try to get right home and sleep till 5 the get up and eat then hit the gym and try to be at work for 8pm.One good thing about being in a place for 12 hrs are scheduled breaks.I prepare all my meals before i go to work and eat every 3hrs tops.It doesn't leave much time for anything else..........the joys of working shifts:sick:

This is the best way!

Haha, this just made me think of the song nightshift by Marvin Gaye. ;) Theres going to be some sweet sounds coming down on the nightshift Ooooooh on the nightshift. :FRlol:

I worked nights for almost 4 years. At first I could sleep during the day, but after 6 months or so, I started being unable to sleep for extended periods of time. I would be dead tired, but because our circadian rhythm raises our metabolism during the day I would have an incredibly hard time sleeping. The noise and the heat during the day didn't help. I would literally go 2-3 days with only a couple of hours sleep. I was a fucking zombie. Some people can sleep days and some people can't; I'm one of the people who can't.

The only way I got off nightshift was by threatening to quit my job (they like bb'ers cuz we do more work, hehe).

It's been about a year since I got off nights and I still cannot sleep the way I used to before nights. Nightshift fucked up my sleep patterns, maybe permanently.

Nightshift if VERY unhealthy for people. It has been shown to shorten human lifespan, raise blood pressure, weaken immune systems, and cause various other health problems.

If you have any say in the matter, I would opt not to take a nighttime job.

I agree with that totally. It's a very unnatural state of being. AC, total darkness and earplugs, only way to survive. You can feel how confused your body is after it's been trained to take a shit at 5 in the morning when all your systems at their most sluggish. It's a real bonus that most of the other people you'll meet working at night are a fucking interactive textbook of human misery. And I spent half my time at work trying to sleep or on the net, bastards kept the building real cold at night to keep people awake.

No way would I work at night unless I needed the money and didn't have time during the day. I'd wipe the asses of sumo wrestlers for a living first. (Hey that's a real job ya know)

GOD I HATE THIS! :(

The funny thing is I only was able to sleep for 4 hours and I have 50 min. to get to work now. Hopefully tommrow I will be able to sleep atleast 6 hours.

Night shift isn't THAT bad

I did it for 2 straight years, while in college full-time

I sat in a chair and did nothing while getting paid for it.

slept from 8am to 3-4pm, got 8 hours of sleep every day. If I wasn't at work, I found myself staying up till 5-6am anyway.

Its not unhealthy when you get regular sleep. Sure if you sleep 3 hours a night its unhealthy but its 100 times less stressful than any day job. And that is what LOWERS blood pressure and stress levels. So basically I disagree with everything that has been said. I still stay up till 6 or 7 every night and live the most unstressful/relaxed life of anyone I know.

Also, I am very light skinned and have over a 90% of getting skin cancer enventually. Staying out of the sun is a plus.

Hey my little hispanic brother....

I worked like 3 years straight of 11:45 PM - 08:15 AM..

Mondays were the worst coming off the W/E when you slept at night.
I can't tell you how many times I almost fell asleep driving home Monday morning.
Tru advice to sleep very little on your Sunday before the week starts. That way you will be able to sleep when you get off Monday Morning.

Best advice is to KEEP BUSY during the shift Physically....

Don't sit down between the wee hours of the morning.
4-6 am are the killer hours...

If you eat lunch make it before these hours and then during these hours DO NOT SIT DOWN..

Move and work up a sweat and you will not even notice what time it is.

Also Don't go outside or look out windows or your clock will go into shock seeing the Darkness.
Stay in the bldg and tell yourself it's the middle of the day..

The Mind is a powerfull thing my friend... Fool it

While you make sense but I have to do alot of heavy lifting and sorting out paper work....that makes it stressful to do this at 2 am in the morning. I think I am growing a white hair on my head now.

Don't worrie my job is never done and I am actually worried that I will be in a catabolic state because of constant lifting, moving around, and hardly any meal breaks for me....hopefully this isn't forever ya know. :)

Ok that sucks, I refuse to do a "working" night shift when so many of them require you to do pretty much nothing.
