Night sweats

A question for all of you:

I went to Florida over the Memorial Day weekend for vacation. Up until that point, I had been on a low/moderate carb diet (anywhere from 50-100g carbs/day). Well, on vacation, I drank & ate freely. It was the first time drinking alcohol in months. A couple days after returning home I started having night sweats - really bad. I would have to get up and change clothes about 2-3/night. This lasted about a week. The past two nights, I've been fine.

Does anyone know if these could have been caused by a diet change?? increase in carbs?? I'm going to the doctor next week to have some tests done - thyroid, diabetes, etc. But, I thought I'd ask here too to see if anyone has had a similar experience. Thanks!

wish I could help you..

I get bad night sweats too if I go to sleep after eating alot of carbs or drinking or a combo of both, my heart also beats very fast... not a nice feeling.

I am puzzled at to why this happened to you afterwards...

You know, I've been waking up soaked in sweat during the last couple of weeks - not every morning, but more than ever before.

And I live in Florida.

It doesn't wake me up, but I swear my jammies weight about 4 pounds from sweat and my hair is soaked.

NOTHING wakes me up. : )

I figured either it was because it's getting hot here in Florida or I'm having hot flashing in my sleep. I am, after all, 39...

Maybe there's some kind of local bug going around - where were you staying over Memorial Day?

I can sympathize. I've had the same problem for the last 2 months. I wake up soaked in sweat. My hair is wet too... It doesn't wake me up either. I'm getting really tired of it. It's not warm in my apartment either, the air conditioning can be on and it still happens.

This is funny - I was just thinking about night sweats, and had a realization this morning when I work up at 4:30 completely soaked and radiating heat like a blast furnace. When I'm dieting, and then I overeat for a day (yesterday was chicken wings and fries, so good!), I get night sweats. I wonder if it has anything to do with NEAT? Can't remember if I've seen NEAT discussed on these boards - Non Exercise Adaptive Thermogenesis. Basically, you take two people with identical metabolisms and overfeed them by 1000 calories a day and keep them inactive (under observation). One person might store almost all the extra calories as fat, the other might store very little. The difference is because some people after overeating respond by getting fidgity and actually wind up burning the calories through being restless. I wonder if another component of NEAT might be overheating during sleep?

THIS is a reaction to thyroid function....when you are on a diet and restrict carbs and calories you slow thyroid down....So when you all of a sudden introduce carbs and sugars you get the furnace turned up...thats why you get hot and sweaty...this will also give restless sleep patterns...remember the brain comes first, when it comes to carbs and sugars....when you go to a high protein/ low carb diet, the brain forces the body to go into fat storage for fuel, protein does not help the brain much...the idea behind ATKINS....forcing the brain to signal fat release for fuel....

Wow -

VERY interesting!

Come to think of it, I've been taking 1000 mgs l'tyrosine before bed and maybe that's what's causing it. I've found it gives me wonderful energy the next day and does nice things for my "symptomatic hypothyroidism". (You know, where you have the symptoms but your numbers won't convince the doc to give you Armour.) However, I have taken it before without this reaction, but have also added arginine/ornithine combo, which may be the difference.

Found out without a doubt that it's not "hot flashes" per se, in the traditional sense. : ) (ugh!)

Tyrosine is used to support thyroid function, it helps with the conversion of T4 to T3...Other support can be had from GUGGLESTERONES, 7kteo-DHEA, selenium, KELP, and ashwangandha....the guggle will increase estrogen after a short while tho... Thats why your on fire FAWN....tyrosine before bed???? I would be in orbit!!!! I take it before I workout with taurine.....

Thanks for the replys - at least I'm not the only one having this problem.

I stayed in Clearwater Beach in Florida. Never had night sweats there, only after I got home (Chicago). I was fine for almost a week, but then had other "wet" night on Saturday. That night, I was in phoenix, but the apartment was cool.

My diet has been very sporadic lately.

The tyrosine doesn't seem to kick in until the next day - energy wise. Could be that with the length of time I've been using it, that it is kicking in sooner. Doesn't jazz me up for a couple of hours at least. Wake up better when I take it before bed.

I live in Tampa - near Clearwater - but seems the sweats are directly related to the tyrosine.

This is an interesting topic..I just came back from a 7 day vacation. I ate maintenance calories 3 days before I left. I was in Phoenix for a wedding for part of the vacation and then Las Vegas..so you can only imagine what my diet was like. It was horrendous..fried foods, ice cream, liquor, the works. I was dieting before this for approximately 5 months. (lost 35 pounds and maintained LBM) I am finding that my heart is beating out of my chest and I am constantly hot and sweaty. My sleep patterns are also odd, as I wake up frequently in the middle of the night...and yes, I'm sweating during the night. I have my air conditioner on even though it's only in the high 70's because quite frankly, if it's not on..I burn up.

Since I've been following the general BB diet over the last 5 yrs or so, I notice that if I load carbs (garbage carbs particularly), two things happen -- my heart starts pounding thru the roof - worse than my worst caffeine binge, and if I really load up on garbage, I will get cramps in my feet *really* bad. My guess, carb loads -- increased water retention, not enough water "circulating". OR does a serious garbage binge inhibit absorption of either potassium or calcium / magnesium?

Either way, there's no good that comes from a garbage binge except momentary satisfaction between the mouth & the stomach. Now if I could just continue to remember that BEFORE I throw the junk into the "piehole".

Try living here. You can imagine the temptations to cheat..... :(

But did you have fun while here in LV?

foot cramps

"and if I really load up on garbage, I will get cramps in my feet *really* bad"

ME TOO SASSY! I didn't associate it at all with my "vacation" diet, but I was getting bad foot cramps around the same time that I had the night sweats.

very interesting stuff...

I DID have a great time in Vegas..I can imagine what it's like living there. Food is everywhere...good food. I went with my parents last time. I'm going back in July with a male friend. I can't wait....but hopefully he won't want to eat like my parents..he's MUCH more health conscious.

When I came back, I was FULL of water..I mean FULL. My waist expanded about 2 inches...bloated like a puffer fish. I am drinking a 1.5 gallons of water a day and took a diuretic and its coming off fast. I normally restrict carbs and have a great diet...I ate donuts for breakfast and ice cream cones for lunch..oddly, I don't regret it. I had been dieting for 5 months and earned it.

All those carbs sugars and fats are like gasoline on camp fire...It takes days to hydrate.....you cannot hydrate thoroughly in a day or two, especially when your down that far..(cramps) Protein diets will DE-HYDRATE....this will also throw your minerals out of wack too...water comsumption has to be taken frequently and in small amounts, otherwise you will keep depleting water, you will find that urination will be very frequent if your intake is too large...ie, large glasses of water all at ounce...NOTE: when thyroid is over active you will get the HEART pounding that you guys are describing, such as taking too much T3 or T4....However, your diets are working, your symptoms are an indication of this when these other foods have been introduced. Just watch your water intake and keep hydrated....
