Next computer (eventually)

I've had my current comp for 3 years and it's a dell so I've wanted to build my own for quite sometime. This is a work in progress b/c by the time I get the money to buy each piece, I'm sure there will be something better and cheaper. Right now the price is around $1100. I've been scouring pricewatch so I'm hoping I can find some better prices. All in all, $1100 is a helluva lot cheaper than if you bought all this premanufactured.

My friend said he's always had good experiences with the Asus boards so I decided on that. I'm up for suggestions though. I need something that will support 8x agp but don't want to pay out the ass for it. I found the Asus for around $160 which is still pretty high though

I know I've said this before when people have wanted to purchase things such as computers/computer parts. But have you ever checked out Ebay? I've found TONS of stuff on there. I'm still thinking about getting a laptop from there.

What made you decide on the Asus board?

spend an extra $10 and get a motherboard that can support dual processors. If you're going to build one yourself today, you might as well be able to go apeshit :)

I've bought a few off lease computers from ebay and have been happy with the price. Just picked up a nice Dell laptop for my dad of there.

nice system you've got lined up there...except break down and get something a little bit bigger than the 40 gig hd.

if i were you, i'd go with pc2100 on the ram and take the money you're saving over the pc2700 and get a bigger hd(unless you're planning on moving the hd from your current system into the new one along with the new 40gig). you're probably not going to notice a difference in the speed of that system whether you've got 2100 or 2700 in there.

I put in a 40gig for OS and stuff, then a pair of raided 80 gigs in my new machine. Oh so nice and speedy.

Why not water cool? I noticed a HUGE performance increase in my system when I did that, although it was worth it alone from a noise standpoint, it is absolutely quiet now, have a block on my CPU, Vid card and HD

It's Darktooth's first build. I don't think he's probably wanting to tackle some water cooling. I'm waiting for him to make a post asking what thermal paste is for and whether or not it's supposed to burn when he applies it to his genitals.

First off, don't depend on pricewatch.com. Many of thise sites are garbage. Use www.newegg.com for the main parts like the processor, motherboard, harddrive, cd-r and what not, you can also use www.ResellerRatings.com for finding other good approved sites and such. Also..

ASUS A7N8X DELUXE SOCKET A MOTHERBOARD
(i suggest an Epox motherboard, they're cheaper and the quality is identica, if not better)

Thermaltake DRAGON ORB3. Heatsink + Dual Ball-Bearing fan
No need... go out and buy an SLK-800 ($35) and a decnt CFM fan for $10

Enermax CS-317 Tower Case
If you want nice cases, check out www.xoxide.com

512MB DDR PC-2700 64X64 333MHz 184PIN Micron
www.crucial.com

SONY 52X Black Bezel CD-ROM
Sony 48x24x48x CD-RW OEM – Black
Get either a plextor or Lite-On CD-RW which are cheaper AND better than Sony. No need in getting the 52x... you're better off getting a DVD-Rom

ATI OEM RADEON 9500 128MB DDR DVI
Think about getting a 9700.

Sound Blaster Live Audigy 2 6.1 PCI
Waste of money. Get the M-Audio Revolution ($100) or the Hercules Fortissimo III ($50)

Creative Labs Inspire 6.1 6600
www.logitech.com ... Great quality for their price.

Ditto on whizkid -> I buy almost all of my new parts from NewEgg. They are awesome and I always recommend them to other people.

All my parts are from www.newegg.com (they always have the right price and shipping is dirt cheap) Easily the best site to buy from.

Wizkid brings up some good points. pricewatch.com can fuck you over if you don't pay attention to the reseller ratings.

I've got no beef with either of those motherboards. I might suggest finding one with onboard sound so you don't have to spend the extra $$ on the sound card. I have onboard sound on my mobo and it sounds just as good as any sound blaster I've ever owned.

As far as your heatsink and fan go, that one you picked out is nice, but it's overkill unless you have plans to overclock your shit.
I've got an SVC GC68 with some garden variety fan. I paid $15 with shipping. My system runs at normal temps...never had any problems.

I ran into problems with the onboard sound on my Dragon Soyo. Had a loud whine on it when capturing video. Drove me fricken crazy. Turned out it was an issue with onboard sound for that mobo, so I just put in another card.

My friend has a soyo with onboard sound and it seems to work good with reular speakers, but he has 5.1 and its no where near as good as a regular sound card that supports them. :)

Playback was fine, it was recording that sucked.

I don't *gasp* play any games on my computer, so sound wasn't that big of a deal for me. Neither was a fast 3d vid card. I went with a Matrox G400 and am running a dual monitor setup. Makes it nice for writing code.

I agree with what supersmallpeeppee says. unless you're going to overclock.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I was looking at the Epox boards but didn't know enough about them. My existing cdrom/rw drives are white and they would look like shit in the black/silver case. I was going a little overboard with the cooling because my a/c doesn't blow hard at all in my computer room so it gets pretty warm in here even with my 733mhz right now. But if it's to much, I'll go ahead and modify that. I'll research some more and post another configuration when I have time later today. Thanks again
