newbie has some questions about low thyroid

Hi all, I'm new posting, but I've visited this board quite a few times. I need some help. I found out a few weeks ago that my thyroid is low and my doctor has prescribed a thyroid medication. Is there anyone here that has the same condition? How should I change my workouts? Is there anything "special" that my doctor should be looking at. (ex. blood work- I'm thinking about having him check my test levels.) Also can this condition be used to my benefit. Extra thyroid med or HRT. Any help would be great.

Don't mess with it. Take what the doc suggests (probably levothyroxin "synthroid") and have your TSH levels checked. If they don't go down, ask to switch to Armour Thyroid.

thanks for the info. What about diet? Is it still possible to get low body fat, are there any pros who have this condition? this has been messing with my head the last couple of weeks, does the ideal of eating every 2-3 hours still apply or does it even matter now that my thyroid is screwed. should i only be worried about calories now? HELP!

I had this condition dianosed by my doc early last summer after years of symptoms (tiredness, weghtgain, mood swings, hairloss, etc) and no, it was not caused by steroids, I am natural to date. I now take Thyroxine every day and will have to do so for the rest of my life. I take 200mcg (been as high as 225mcg) and get a blood test done every 3 months. All the medication basically does is provide your body with a hormone that is not being produced, fat loss/gain and workouts do not need to change. You are now 'normal' again and if anything you will be a little leaner due to increased metabolic rate (you may therefore need to up your cals to continue with gains).
I personally have had no problems with test levels although if you are worried get them checked. It realy is not a biggy, it is quite a common thing and once treated at the correct dose (important) you will be feeling better than ever.
Good luck.

Thanks scoob, how long did it take for you to reach your "normal" levels. My doc started me at 50mcg, I'm to see him in a couple of weeks for more blood work. also, did you see a endocrinlogist or just your family doctor?

Thyroid and TSH levels

You should have your Doctor check your TSH levels in about 6-8 weeks after being on the medicine. Some people have hyperactive Thyroids while others have hypoactive thryroid. Generally, high TSH levels are that of hypo. Do you have any trouble swallowing? Or do you feel a lump on one side? If so, you should request to have a Thyroid Ultrasound done to rule out a Goiter, nodule, or other pathology. Your diet really need not change. The best diet is 5-6 meals a day. Eating around the clock will boost your metabolism. Thyroid problems can alter a person's metabolism. Your doctor must have found something wrong with your TSH when doing a routine blood work-up. You may actually find more energy being on the medication. Most of my patient's Thyroid problems cause low energy, so the medication may help this. Good luck!!

Take your thyroid meds in the morning and don't take any vitamins (like those containing calcium) within 2 hours either way of taking the thyroid meds. Supplements like calcium interfere with the absorption and utilization of thyroid meds.
