aha. Can't wait to get out and explore the great free market, but in the meantime, you'll relax in the Army, eth?

:)

Well, I wouldn't exactly call it relaxing, I serve in an Combat Arms unit, but I do enjoy what I do. As far as the free market, for now my participation is limited to stock market investments. When I retire in a few years I will take my MBA and go shopping in Corporate America.

I actually wrote mine down this year.

1. Get organized
2. Take care of all my legal matters
3. Get abs (heheh, this prolly the toughest)
4. Get medical problems fixed
5. Stop smoking completely (started back after my mother passed away)
6. Finish remodeling my condo (been at it wayyyy too long)
7. Stop procrastinating (notice it's number 7 on the list)
8. Start my ebay back up and rake in some serious moolah.

mmm hmmm. I was in the Navy. I'm familiar with military life.

Your advanced degree doesn't guarantee much anymore, although it is a great accomplishment. I'm not cutting you down, just making you aware of a reality that 16 years in the military shields you from.

Your conservative perspective, knowledge of corporate life and such, will definitely force me to view your political opinions with a different weight.

Retiring after years of government toil with a guaranteed income and then competing in the corporate job market is quite different than someone without a public tax funded income/pension.

Now I understand your conservative stance, and your lack of understanding of what it takes to compete as an employee in the private sector.

Thank you for serving in our fine military though.

My friend's mom buys clothes at garage sales and sells them on ebay. Makes a ton of money for what she does.

Miz Chick catches on.

SC, NOTHING in life is guaranteed, and I know that my landing a second career will not be automatic. That is why I attended night school to get an MBA. I have not been insulated from what goes on in the Corporate world. My brother has been with Procter & Gamble since he left the Army 8 years ago and many of my colleagues have made the same type of career change. I am familiar with the transition.

Don't assume that military income is guarnteed. People I work with are passed over for promotion and shown the door every year.

People buy used clothes on ebay? That has to be indicative of the addictablity of the experience. Can there be any real baragin in used pants on the internet?

I used to sell videos but now they are out of print. I am gonna do clothes and colletibles this year i think.

I've sold trading cards and collectible toys, more for fun than profit. (more free market dabbling, strongchick!)

Surprised me, too. Apparently, old women's clothing sells really well. I wouldn't expect that market to be real "in tune" with internet auctions.

people buy anything on the net.... but what sells really well is vintage clothing or gimmick clothing... like gothic and stuff people in BFE can't get at their local mall because they have no local mall... it's a strange addiction... i bascially just trade my stuff for cooler stuf heheh.

Not so much a bargain musclebrains, as a way to find a particular size or style in used clothing, as opposed to cruising garage sales.

For example I could go on ebay and probably find a used pair of brown courdory pants for my 8 year old boy if I so desired.

More like Miz Chick stirs the shit.

Maybe. On the other hand, people accuse STrongchick all the time of being a product of affirmative-action or liberal culture. I've been accused of living in an ivory tower because of my academic interests.

She's simply making the point that anyone living inside the highly controlled culture of the U.S. military is shielded from some of the more difficult problems with which many people have to deal living outside that culture. It also predisposes one to a certain attitude toward international conflicts.

That's not to say military service isn't valuable to the rest of us.

Hmmm. I have nearly the total collection of weird Converse high tops. Somebody offered me a fortune for them. Maybe I should put 'em on ebay.

Something tells me he grew up in the military.

For the record, I became a conservative while a student at The University of Texas at Austin during the transition from the doom and gloom of the Carter administration to the optimism, success and leadership of Ronald Reagan.

I chose to join the military and I have made it my career in part due to my conservatism.

You're right, my dad was in the Army too. But when I arrived at UT I was a knee-jerk Democrat. I voted for Carter in my first presidential election (shhhhhh!)

Interesting. Now, who's side was your dad on when he worked for Commander in Chief Carter?

I really didn't plan on making any resolutions just because I have never made a resolution before. But I figure here's a couple things I could stick by.........

*Start going to the gym again 3 days a week (possibly 4, its hard cause I'm working 2 jobs). I slacked off in November and December cause I was sick, and there was no time! So its back to the gym again for me!!

*Smoke less weed. Its not too bad when you smoke often, better than cigarettes, cause you can actually get something off of weed! I smoke way too much when I hang with the girls though!

*WATCH MY MONEY!!! This is a biggie. I have to pay more attention to saving. Its not like I blow it off or anything, its just that, well, I have to save more!!! ;)

My parents are life-long Democrats, although they raised us in a very conservative (religious, fiscal, social) home. It is ironic to me that they are knee-jerk Democrats.

Ah ha! You are a rebel! :D

Anyway, I have two resolutions this year. The first is that everyone's going to start treating me with more respect. The second is that everyone's going to be nice to me.

Let me be the first: :moon:

Boy, I hate New Year's Resolutions. It almost seems like you are making a list of the impossible. But here I go anyway.....

-I would like to ultimately decrease my body fat to 8%, while still maintaining my current weight.

-I want to compete and actually finish in the triathalon in August.

-I would like to hopefully finish drywalling and complete my never-ending basement project.

-To truly live life like there is no tommorrow by appreciating the little things and living each day to the fullest.

-And I suppose it wouldn't be a bad idea to sleep more and party less......maybe I will start this one in February.

Hope Everyone has a Good New Year~~

My thoughts exactly. Meet me at a central location so I can really make you appreciate life. :p

Let's see, the story would read: "middle class kid from the suburbs runs off to college, becomes a republican, follows in his father's footsteps and makes the military his career, gets married and has kids..."

I don't think I qualify as a rebel!
