New Volkswagen

NeverMind

Interesting mid-engined roadster concept.
Not bad performance either.
Can hear the assholes now ' Couldn't afford the Boxter eh?'

Man after my GF owning a VW, i can assuredly say i will NOT buy one in the future. Good engine and tranny but the interior plastics suck. Shit breaks all the time. Things that broke.

1. cruise controll
2. Radio
3. Intemittent wipers.
4. Clutch, twice
5. ignition
6. tail lights. Not bulbs, electrical glitch.
7. Paint has no clear coat on it and is water spotted, no shine.

take the sucker in for service and you will creep up on $1000.00 real fast. All in all the car is crappy. NOT worth the money in ANY way shape or form. VW is the German chevy.

what kind of VW was it? never had those kind of problems, in fact german cars are known for their reliability.

vw has a public perception of reliability but it's not the same as a real reliability.

The main issues I know with the new VWs are that their front windows break a lot - not in a shatter sort of way, but in a fall down into the door and crack and then are unable to come back up sort of way.
Costs about $500 to fix and it happens frequently enough that I would be fat too annoyed (and cold in Boston) to want one.

Also, that car looks cool at first, but upon closer inspection, has too many similarities to the Toyota MR2 - I wonder if it also is "mid-engined" the same way the MR2 is, in the sense that the engine is over and beyond the rear axel, making it... not mid-engined except in marketing naming terms.

This coming from someone that is looking to buy a Ford truck?

right
OWNED!
Car looks good , similar to TT though from front end. I'd definitely pick it over an MR2 .

Germans tend to OVER Engineer everything in their vehicles.
All the way down to the knobs on the A/C.

OverEngineering does not generally = Reliability

But it does = Fun to drive

"Overengineer" ? What does that mean , some of my friends at Audi would love to know , I kinda have an idea though and I agree with you - they take a long time to update models and nitpick over minor details - but they've always been like that. Remember what Mercedes did after the elk test , and Audi over a similar test on the TT? Compare that with what Ford did with Firestone and you get some idea of what these boys are willing to go through. As a matter of fact I HATE the interior on the base Z4 model.

Exactly, Spending wayyy too much time on the total perfection of
any item they are engineering.
Brakes, Knobs, Compressors, Electrical components.
Example is the Windows All down with the key in the door feature.
Way cool but something else to break down.

Yes, they come up with new ideas and technical innovations
that others manuf take over after VW/AUDI/BMW etc have proved it out and fixed any issues.
But this cutting edge approach in their cars can make them not as reliable as the Old school tried and true but less exciting technologies from US manuf in general.

Sure , I can see that , but look at the windscreen wiper , safety belt, side crash arms and airbag. These are all innovations that increase your safety dramatically , car manufacturers all imclude these items on their products today , wouldnt you rather have these products on your machine , say , if your daughter was driving? BMW worked extremely hard on engine reliability in the 60s and made their cars the forefront in that area, some things about the latest German cars I dont particularly like (see Z4 base model) because they've spent a fortune on chassis design but the cars look and drive great. My old man , a lifelong Swedish and British car driver (Saab,Jaguar and Volvo) came to Munich last April when we rented a BMW 320i convertible , he was blown away by the handling of the machine and its internals. You cannot argue with V8's normally , it's such a natural configuraiton offering great power and reliability at low revs (see increased reliability) but they are incredibly thirsty plants , especially when fuel is so expensive.

I think it is great that they developed them.
I'm just not sure if I want to be the first to try them out in my vehicle that must last me 8 years until they have been worked thru the bugs etc for Reliablities sake, not safety...

Typically VW reliability is NOT with the Engine or Trans or even these days electrical.
It's the little buttons, knobs, gizmo's that break driving people crazy paying big $ to get them fixed over the years..
