New Rotti PUP, any input?

We've had two. One female was easy to train and could not have been a better dog and we had babies in the house. She got arthritis in her spine at 6 and we thought so much of her that we wanted another. My wife wanted a male and it was the polar opposite. By the time it was a year old we had to get rid of it because he couldn't be trusted with the kids.

Why the fuck would you even gamble with those dogs? It's obviously a crap shoot whether or not they will be trusted around kids. I have a good friend growing up that was mauled by one requiring multiple facial reconstructive surgery. It was 10 years old and sweet as pie until something set it off.

Let me ask you this: Would you put your children in the car if yo knew there would be a 50% chance of them being in a horrible car crash? So why the fuck would you EVER get a rot or a pit when you have young kids in the house?? This absolutely blows my mind. Especially with all the many many other alternatives out there.

firstly ignore ignorant scaremongers like pdadddy

secondly educate yourself and anyone else involved with the pup, read whatever you can get your hands on, treat the dog with love but be firm, be consistent, be patient, make it know its role in the family, socialize it with people and other animals, familiarize it with sights, sounds and textures and be prepared to put in plenty of time and effort

I've been around lots of different breeds of dogs most of my life. We bred papered dogs when I was a kid. In my experience most of the dogs that are handled correctly aren't mean just to be mean.
The male dog we got was papered, and as a puppy showed no signs of any inbreeding. As he got older and more mature it seemed more like the breeder had falsified the lineage. He was less than intelligent, stubborn, and had the normal male dominance issues. That being said, I've seen enough to understand where you're coming from. If you don't train a dog, any dog, it learns it's place in the pack by it's environment. Some breeds are not much for protection, some are, and at the time a protective dog was important. I wouldn't choose another male Rotti because of the training and dominance issues. To much trouble for me.
My ideal protective dog now would be different than it was before. My view of gun dogs is still about the same. My thoughts on retrievers hasn't changed much. I don't think hunting hounds make good pets, and some small dogs could be worth having if you're into them. What dog you choose and how they'll be is always a crap shoot. Small dogs, and the Spinger Spaniel in particular, are the most frequent biters.
Yes I would consider a female Rot, I don't care for many of the other so called "watch dogs". Even the even tempered German Shepard. To each their own.

I wouldn't be concerned with a Rotty mauling a family member at all. I have owned one, and my brother in law has one with young kids around it.
Rottys aren't a viscous or snappy breed.

I'd be concerned with the fact that their hips go early, weight and health issues, and not a long life span.

It's all about training yourself and the dog. A must investment when it comes to dogs. I have an Akita, it's my 2nd one and I have kids. The dog is great. However, I will say that if neither my wife or I are home and the kids are there by themselves it would be a good idea to go into the house.

My parents had a Rott for 11 years...it was a perfect pet. Of course, we all put the work in to train it properly...if you want a dog that requires minimal effort, this is not the breed for you. Obedience work is a MUST, and you must work the dog often to remind it who's boss. They are, if raised right, very laid back dogs around family members...but are fantastic home protectors; a blend of lovable family pet and fierce family guardian.

I had 2 rotts and 1 was a psycho one wasnt, what was the difference? my father made sure to "make" the psycho since he would lock him up so he would get "mad" which is the most stupid thing I ever heard, that poor dog hates everything and everyone and can not be tken out or socialized, the other dog on the other hand was a joy to have around and was properly trained, it's all in your hands, there are no "bad breeds" just bad owners....

What Ezekiel and Canandianhitman said, seriously, invest in puppy school. There are very few truly bad dogs (bad breeding, now, that's different); granted, some breeds are inappropriate as housepets. But bad behavior in more than 95% of the working breeds (Rotts were originally herding and draught dogs) stems from dogs that are too closely inbred, insufficient training, little or no discipline, or just generally bad handling on the owners part (a spoiled dog is almost as pleasant to be around as a spoiled child).

Incidentally, working breeds like to WORK. They're happy as clams having jobs to do, even if you get little dog vests and have them carry bottles of water when you go on walks with them.

my friends aunt and uncle live in a kinda bad section of town. they are elderly and have 2 rotts. they are the nicest dogs that i have ever seen. they're only there to look intimidating and scare people off.
