New House and Gym

FreeballinDC

Gym in the Basement

I finally got a ratified contract on a house here in DC. Nice fixer upper, two story, with semi-finished basement.

The basement is big enough to have a home gym. The ceiling is high enough for a squat rack, and there is room for 3 or 4 other pieces of equipment.

I am looking for suggestions on who makes good quality home equipment, and what else to get besides a bench and squat rack.

I know there have to be some home-lifters on here somewhere.

Thanks!

Hammer Strength Systems makes the best stuff going.

I would go with a smith machine for at home - alone workouts on squat and bench.

If you weren't from the paleolithic era...and senile...I would "cyber-slap" you.

Smith Machine?

congrats bro? what section of town?

Thanks NB, it's in NE DC. It will be close to a new metro stop, so I won't have to take a bus to work. I am trying to get some ideas on what equipment I need.

Hannibal, Wodin doesn't have a bad idea on the Smith machine. There are those who believe that no assistance is the best, but if I go too heavy, I would like to think that I could rack the weight before I kill my self.

Could you explain this to me? I am not a complete newbie, but I am assuming that a squat rack and bench will make me use "stabilizer" muscles more than a Smith Machine.

Is that what you mean? Or am I missing something?

Free weights are better for the "stabilizers" as you put it, yes. But also when you use a Smith Machine for squats you are in such a position that you are putting a tremendous amount of unnecessary stress on the knees.
