I saw it in a novel, one I read as a kid, where this girl was transported back to victorian edinburgh and she wasn't allowed call it the "lavatory" as that was considered "common" - the women called it the "wee hoosie" and spoke about it in whispers....

I don't know how well the author did her research, but there's no reason for them to make that up...

and as this is the trainnig board -

off to do bench in an hour or so. Followed by some cardio (argh! hateithateithateit!)
