Anyone know if its possible if i can network my DSL onto a laptop? Sister is being a bitch and wants the DSL on the laptop because i won't let her anywhere near my comp. lol
There's no network card in it, is it hard putting one in a laptop? hmmm im a computer n00b.

allmost all laptops come with slots where you can put in network cards. Go to the manufacturers website and find out what kind of card they support. Then most likely you'll have to install some VPN software (you do at least if you use verizon DSL) on your laptop to get connected.

what kind of modem and service do you have?

If you line is USB like mine then you'll need a USB port.

If it's network (If this is home use I suspect not) then obvously RJ45 to the nearest hub then direct to the router, requiring network card/adapter in the laptop (about $20), static IP address and so on. Unlikely.

On both counts tho, the laptop should have a serial port called Comm1. If this is the case, then you can use this instead. You will just need a media adapter to convert your RJ45/USB to a female 9 pin serial thingy, and configure the Comm port in the BIOS and also in control panel under "modems", and then for your internet connection.

Any questions, or post more info and I can be more specific. :)

DSL suppliers rarely support connection sharing tho, and as such neither does a lot of software.

what kinder DSL anyway? ADSL, SDSL, VDSL, spill de beans!!!

The network card will be easy. I'd suggest 3Com. You'll pay a little more, but it'll be a lot easier in the long run.

If you want supported connection sharing, you usally have to pay more of a monthly fee, and they'll supply you with different equipment. I use SBC Communications (any of the Bells) and that's how they do it.

There's another way to do all this too, btw: Internet Connection Sharing. I've used it before, and when it works, it works well. When it's not cooperative, it's a bitch.

You can do this several ways.

1) You can buy a DSL router for like $150 bux and a (I recommend) LinkSys integrated LAN card for the laptop (do not buy the little cards with the little hanging attachment, they break *SO* easily).

Or

2) Buy the same lan card for laptop and buy another card for your PC and get a crossover cable and enable internet sharing. #2 is the cheapest, but the PC would have to be turned on whenever the laptop wants to go online.
