Alright, I almost never post on threads anymore where people ask about their diet set-ups, but this one sort of caught my eyes. This is where simple planned diets excel...ala...Body-For-Life!!!
At someone her size, this diet will do wonders for her in that is very easy and simple to do. It's sort of like an abcdefg...diet. It will not wear her out either by being too strict.
Here's what I would do:
Start her on 5-6 meals per day as it will help keep satiety firm.
Now, on this diet Buttplug recommends taking portion sizes the size of her palm (or the size of a cassette). Although this is not the most accurate way of determining calorie consumption, it will do the job in this case as it makes things easy.
Meals 1-4:
Take a portion size of a carb/protein/veggie
***She can substitute meal replacements in if she wants to.
***Have her avoid fruits...at least for right now.
Protein sources should be stuff like lean meats, meal replacement drinks, eggs, cottage cheese, poulty, fish, etc...The usual things. Protein is pretty basic in that it is a pretty small list to choose from.
Carb sources: Try to print out a list of the Glycemic Index and have her choose from foods that are about 55-60 and below for her carb choices. There are various choices to choose from so she should have a hay-day here.
Vege's: Pretty self explanatory...
Tell her not to drown her food with butters and fried oils when cooking.
Her plates should have these 3 sources on it for the first 4 meals.
MEALS 5 AND 6: These should still consist of the protein portions and maybe some protein powder drinks, but instead of having a carb portion have her double up on the vegetable portions. Therefore, instead of having a carb portion and a vege portion, she will have two vege portions.
Also, she could substitute nuts and healthy fats in these meals. Remember though, it doesn't take many nuts and fats to add up fast.
Incorporate refeeds once a week for the first few weeks and let her eat whatever she want to. Sunday are good days to do this on, or whatever day best fits her svchedule.
After awhile, she can start incorporating refeeds twice a week to every 3 days to help things out. However, she may not want to do this until after she has already lost a fair amount of weight.
Weight training: Since you frequent the training board, you may want to take this into your own hands but...
If she is not ready for weight training, then just start her out on doing cardio every day (except for sundays) until she is ready. However, I would highly suggest you get her motivated for future plans of weight training. With the BFL program, i found that the workout scheme really worked well with the diet. Have her alternate upper body and lower body workouts EOD. In other words, one day upper body, next day cardio, next day lower body, next day cardio, then repeat. Have her take-off sundays when she refeeds...if she wants to, then just have her do some cardio.
Personally, I like doing short bouts of cardio for about 30 minutes using high intensity interval training, but she may want to start out using moderate cardio before advancing to more advanced schemes.
Above most things she will need your support!!! ALWAYS tell her she is looking better and that she is doing a great job!!! Remember, the hardest part is getting people motivated to actually do the diets. You cannot hold her hand and make her do things she doesn't want to do. However, show that you are interested in helping her, and do whatever you can to show this. You may want to even help her with her meals starting out so that she knows what she is doing. I find more satisfaction in helping others than I do in helping myself. If you are serious about helping her bro, then show it!!!
I would like to conclude that with her being 17 years old and obese as she is, then she may be suffering from both laziness/lack of motivation and maybe even some sort of depression. Again, she will need you man. At that age, she is still in high school, and these are some rough for some, especially if you are obese. Some kids/teens can be down-right cruel!!! And last but not least, there is always the chance that there could be some sort of hormonal imbalance which may be making things worse. In this case, she may want to go and get a check-up to see if her body is out of whack. See if the "healthier" dieting makes a difference.
Good luck bro, and whatever you and her decide, keep us updated!!!
