Need advice - multi-cat owners

I've got 1 male cat - he's 14 1/2 yrs old & a bit tubby. He's declawed in front & neutered since he was about 3 months old. He's been an only cat and an indoor cat for his whole life. Problem now - I live in a really quiet area where there's not much even outside the window to keep him occupied and he's getting really really whiny about it like he's bored completely out of his mind (and that's gotta be hard for a cat...)

So I'm wondering about getting him a kitten...

Some questions & concerns I have tho -

- how will he get along w/ another kitty? No idea how a cat who is 14 yrs used to being king of the house & the only cat would deal w/ another cat.

- would he pee in the house -- i.e. to mark territory? The fat one has done it in the past in apartments where there's probably cat smell from cats that lived there in the past - and my cat was methodical about peeing. In the places I"ve lived that were brand new (no chance there was a cat in them), he has no problem and has no problem in general.

My practical concerns are the volume of cat hair - the one I have sheds a pile already. But the chance one or the other might start peeing in the house is bad - I"m trying to sell my house so I just can't have that at all.

And generally all our cats have lasted at least 18 yrs so I can probably expect to be strapped w/ at least one cat for the next 20 yrs.

Is it worth attempting? It could keep the current cat much happier & more occupied, possibly even make him lose some weight. But it could also not work and he gets paranoid in his own house.....

Any suggestions or comments?

Sass, I have had 6 cats at one point. I've had cats in age from 24 to 6 months. Every time I would bring a kitten in, the older ones never fought with the kitten. They smothered the kitten with attention.
I have a new kitten now and my other cats just adore her.
If I could post video, I would show you how much.
Get the kitten, it will keep your old guys young :-)
Oh and my other cats never peed b/c of the new cats...EVER!

It depends, you will have to try it out.

We have 3 cats and a dog. Had a fish but the cats killed it :)

The third cat came along and we had one pissing incident but that was mostly due to a overloading of the litter box. I fucking hate litter boxes.

I ended up buying one of those automatic cleaning litter boxes and we've never had a problem since.

We have one of the mongo expensive Dyson vacs. Works great picking up the gobs of animal hair in the house.

Hard saying. Personally id try it, if he dont like kitty give him away. We have lots of cats and depends on the personality.
I agree here. Different cats have different personalities. I put two kitties together once and they played and groomed each other 24/7 and even slept with their arms wrapped around each other. I brought a different cat into the mix and there were crazy fights. Cats really are individual as humans.
