Here is the question :

"what has 30 years brought us in gay rights?"

(yes, I am serious. None of these flavored lube, edible condoms type shit. Or Jeff Stryker shit. Quick bitches, and be serious.)

I want to see what comments you have compared to the one I am going to submit.

Basically nothing.

In our current regressing society being gay is still seen as some sort of plague like leperocy. A lot of the general public view it as some curable disease and not just a state of being. People have more sympathy for suspected terrorists than gay marriage or a gay couple trying to adopt.

what? this is all wrong!
I highly doubt ppl have more sympathy for terrorists than a gay couple trying to marry?!
Well not in Canada anyway!

By the way, it took women MANY years to fight for their rights and we are still treated like second class citizens in the work place.

Can't compare Canada to the US socially hun.
The only bigger witch hunt in the US right now is immigration.

Maybe i'm ignorant, but besides the right to marry, what other rights could/should be bestowed on someone for their sexual orientation?

Great advances in interior decorating and hairstyles.

They even changed out the minister part in Poseidon Adventure for a gay architect who brought his business partners on a cruise to explain his breakup with his longtime boyfriend.

being openly gay is a bit more acceptable, but its a long road. Look at the Civil rights movement. They parallel each other.

In NJ they're allowed civil unions but recently have argued why they can't be on each others' medical insurance and benefits etc...

I thought the whole argument for civil unions WAS to be like regular married people. How the hell did that benefits thing slip by?

There goes my plan to marry some dudes to put them on my benefits. Highest bidder gets my medical plan.

i dunno........in many parts of the country it's still easier being black than being gay..... :worried:

There will be bigots in all walks of life. Don't know how we are going to legislate asshattery out of the world.

So really... look at gays in the 70's. Now look at the Pick3's of today.

What improvements are they experiencing?

Or on the other side of the coin, what unimprovements have occured for them.

americans in general have a skewed idea of "rights". . .many of the things that we refer to as "rights" are actually "privileges". . .rights are something that you are born with, and they are surprisingly few. . .privileges are earned (and can be taken away ala "the patriot act"). . .additionally, in the u.s., we've come to expect instant satisfaction (no car? no credit?? no problem!!!).

long story short? it's been 30 years. . .and it looks like it's gonna be a few more.

If *THAT* isn't progression, I don't know what is.

I think he means more "Bill of Rights" than inalienable human rights.

But yes too many people take priviledges are rights.

apart from teh marriage thing (that blipped in then out as i recall) pretty much the only thing that has changed is awareness, a decrese in intolerance...although i dont see that many real 'rights' require tailoring to sexual orientation..

the bill of rights is actually fairly narrowly defined. . .it has, however, been somewhat broadly interpreted at times. . .the constitution has been around for quite a while and has not been amended nearly as many times or as broadly as the liberal media would have you believe. . .there's a good reason for that. . .everybody wants to be free, but no one (except some criminal organizations) wants to (or would be able to) live in a state of anarchy. . .

We have to do something to inspire skinny ass pickles like yourself to butch it up.

Let's face it, without 20" arms, you ain't gonna be pulling off that damn purple room any time soon.

Being gay is a lot more accepted in some urban areas then it was 30 years ago. More tolerated in most suburban areas (they just talk shit when you aren't around) but basically just as hated in most rural areas though overt violence has decreased everywhere.

Legally there has been some considerable change, 30 years ago you could kill a gay man, tell the judge you where scared that he was hitting on you and have a decent chance of getting off with a slap on the wrist. Today that is far less likely to work.

Another big improvement is that we can't be randomly arrested for being in a gay bar anymore then have our names posted in the paper and lose our job as a result.

Many gay people still lose jobs over sexuality though. Some bosses will still fire gay people because it was making them, and/or coworkers uncomfortable.

The only one that comes to mind is that gay people have become very associated with the political correctness stupidity. Movements to extend hate-crime laws, laws that you can't fire someone for being gay, and efforts to make "fag" on par with "nigger" as forbidden terms inspire a lot of idiots to think that the best way to "fight the power" is to bash gay people.

I strongly believe that the extra lawsuits and red tape that came with reverse-racism laws actually hurt black people a lot more then most realize. And I don't want that to happen to us. I think the ideal state is no laws against or for homosexuality beyond the very basic legal protections that go into civil unions like hospital visits.
