Navy Missile Hits Spy Satellite

WASHINGTON (AP) - A missile launched from a Navy ship successfully struck a dying U.S. spy satellite passing 130 miles over the Pacific on Wednesday, a defense official said. Full details were not immediately available.
It happened just after 10:30 p.m. EST.

Two officials said the missile was launched successfully. One official, who is close to the process, said it hit the target. He said details on the results were not immediately known.

The goal in this first-of-its-kind mission for the Navy was not just to hit the satellite but to obliterate a tank aboard the spacecraft carrying 1,000 pounds of a toxic fuel called hydrazine.

U.S. officials have said the fuel would pose a potential health hazard to humans if it landed in a populated area. Although the odds of that were small even if the Pentagon had chosen not to try to shoot down the satellite, it was determined that it was worth trying to eliminate even that small chance.

Officials said it might take a day or longer to know for sure if the toxic fuel was blown up.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

WASHINGTON (AP)—A defense official says a missile launched from a Navy ship in the Pacific hit the U.S. spy satellite it was targeting 130 miles above Earth's surface. Full details are not yet available.

Good for them. At least now people wont be able to argue that our desires to build up defense weapons are a waste of money.

Funny the word "Navy".

Translation: "Navy defense contractors'.

The lowly E1 Seaman isn't pressing buttons.

So let's hear it for Lockheed Martin or Raytheon or whoever was responsible for developing that technology!

The Chinese took out a satellite with a missile months ago....I posted the news story. Guess we're falling behind the Chinese in everything....:)

I wouldn't be surprised if that Chinese company actually sold us the technology to do that. Then we slapped a 'navy' sticker on it, placed a 18 y/o Seamen in front of the machine, then let the media take pictures!

I couldn't believe how sad army training was. We were training like it was still 1930 and we were getting ready to storm Normandy.

Me: "DS, do you know all the enemy has to do, to destroy all of our training - is shed their uniforms, and blend into the crowd. Then what??"

DS: "Uhhh.."

At least your $12B per month is going to useful purposes. :)

Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems
and Sensors of Moorestown, New Jersey is the Combat System Engineering Agent (CSEA) and prime
contractor for the Aegis BMD Weapon System and Vertical Launch System installed in Aegis-equipped
cruisers and destroyers. Raytheon Missile Systems of Tucson, Arizona is the prime contractor for the SM-3
missile and all previous variants of Standard Missile.

Your DS was a douche if he had no answer for that...even if it was just "Shut up and push".

If the crowd ain't running when shooting starts, it ain't a crowd. More to shoot. But, you would have to be in a situation where there is a crowd of course. I assume you went in around Somalia time frame for that question.

Another DS smoked me later for 'It's not your job to think, you're not a damn officer'. I then focused on maxing out my APFT scores. I can now destroy Iraqi's with my 2-mile runs. :)

for all we know they put up 20 missiles and one got lucky. And something tells me that sattellite was put up in orbit specifically to malfunction and showcase this shootdown........otherwise this would have never made it into the media. I'm sure it was an expensive test too. Between the satellite and the missile, let's presume it was only one............you could probably fund a 3rd world country for one year if not more.

Nope, shorts t-shirt and running shoes.

We did the 2 miles on a stupid black rubberized track. 10:56 is my best (I played soccer in high school and thru the ODP program so I was used to running).

Now, we need to rig a missile to hit Fidel right between the eyes.

I heard last night on the news that the satelite was moving at over 17,000 miles an hour, three times the speed of sound. It circles the globe once every 90 minutes. I had no idea that these things moved that fast. How is that even possible? What in the hell powers this movement?

I think timing a missle up to intersect something moving at that rate of speed is astounding. Talk about about a quarterback leading his receiver...

Yeah the Chinese may be able to shoot down their own satellites but they can't shoot down their own sub tracking satellites......

and it was "cold"
no heat so the intercept missles had to be adjusted as they are typically targeted to a heat source

I was quite impressed when I got the details of what was involved

How do you know? They got a lot of US missile tech under the Clinton admin... :worried:
