nano transistors finally invented

yup. sometimes on this board i talk about nanotechnology. which will open up new doorways in medicine, technology, and probably everything else as most facets of life can be linked to these 2 in some way.

anyway, they invented a 1 molecule transistor.

it will be a few years before they can commerically produce it, but hopefully this means that soon (ie within 20 years) you will be able to store a university library in your wristwatch.

The Diamond Age.

if you want a fun read

i don't read fiction. i prefer to watch it (i prefer to watch non fiction documentaries & instructional videos too but there aren't many)

i was at the library today, and while looking at books i saw a copy of 'the demon haunted world' by carl sagan.

when i saw that the copyright date was 1996 (well into the new age movement) he lost alot of his credibility. he was predicting a movement that existed for a long time (thats not to say that i read it. i just glanced at it). besides, we are in the most scientifically productive era of human history, so i don't find his ideas (or what i gathered from them in the summary) applicable or relevant, to be honest. and he is probably to biased to be able to 'debunk' people who want to believe in pseudoscience or who find that regular science can't explain what pseudoscience can. you have to offer viable explanations and be unbiased. people like james randi, another skeptic, don't do that. they just jump in feet first, assume they are right and that everything will work out according to their world view in the end (hehehe. as i said, i didn't read it, i only read the summary. so i have no idea if that was his stance. im assuming it was by some of the reviews in amazon.com). reading more reviews, it seems to have a good idea (we let the emotional comfort of certainty of how things work overwhelm the intellectual need for knowledge of how things really work), ill read it next time im at the library.

'the user illusion' by Tor Nrretranders is another good non fiction book.

on another technology note, I read on slashdot about a new storage device the size of a credit card that holds over 10 terabytes of data with no moving parts. It should be out in 2 years and its estimated cost will be $50 dollars. Another example of the "miniturization" of technology.

I work in this industry and it always shocks me even now, the lasers I make in my room that are used in telecommunications are FRIGGIN' tiny, like on a two inch wafer there are thousands of lasers. One would fit comfortable on the head of a pin.......and our stuff isn't really that small!

tera is above giga right?

wow. 10,240 GB of storage data on a credit card. how many books, wav files & dvd's is that? a good movie is about 1.4GB, book is 1-2MB, WAV file is 50KB.

jesus. 500 movies, 10000 songs & 10000 books wont even put too big a dent in it.

fuck, you can put a university sized library (2 million books or so) on it. 5MB (large book) x 2 million = 10 TB.

i've always considered that to be when i am 'in'. when i can have a university library at my disposal. thats why i brought that up with the nanotechnology.

WE ARE THE BORG.
YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED.
YOUR BIOLOGICAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL DISTINCTIVENESS WILL BE ADDED TO OUR OWN.
RESISTENCE IS FUTILE.

Seriously, that's awesome, nanotechnology....pretty incredible stuff.

HS - I'm looking for a good book to start while sitting around at GNC, I've started "Atlas Shrugged" and have another Tom Clancy book lined up, what is the Diamond Age about?
