My professor wants to see me after the test...

Crap...I just went to see her and she asked me to wait in the lobby after everyone else is finished. Good lord...this can't be good. My heart is racing. I'm 2 weeks from finishing the semester, I just turned an 18 page paper in yesterday morning, and now this...

Probably not. Big question is did you cheat or plagiarize? Only reason your professor would typically want to see you is if you extremely deviated from the mean in one direction or the other. Hopefullly you aced it. I had some girl friends in college that liked to wear low cut shirts and blouses to show of there boobies to the teachers in hopes of distraction or extra credit, I think that might be a good idea for this encounter too.

It could be good, it could be bad, it could be nothing much. Worrying about it is a waste of energy...focus on your test and do your best. Good luck!

I've learned over the years to not worry, until you actually
have Something to Worry about..

Maybe she wants to ask for your help on something ?

Did you have this going on during a test?

;)

Wandering eyes?

lol

Good luck. Whatever it is, smile and act naive. It works, especially with beautiful women.

Night Fly, don't worry about it so much. Just smile and be nice, and BTW, have I told you you're very cute!!

Is your professor hot? Maybe she is looking for a little rug buffet action later. You know... extra credit type thing.

Okay...I knew it wasn't going to be good.

First of all...not only was SHE in there, but also my clinical professor. I had missed clinicals for the past two weeks because I was sick....like laying in my bed/house and doing absolutely nothing sick. I thought I had mono and had told my clinical professor that my test was negative...but explained the symptoms to him and he told me that I probably had it.

Anyway, just to get things straight...my clinical professor is male and my class professor is female.

You know...I really didn't think I was doing anything wrong. I thought that I did everything the right way. I had 2 doctors excuses one for each week that I missed. My professor said that I didn't get those in to her in time...and I told her that I thought I needed to get them to MY clinical professor...and she wasn't him.

She then proceeded to degrade me. Told me how important this semesters clinicals was and how I had missed 2 out of the 12 weeks. She said that even though I had a doc's excuse, it was still up to her and John whether or not it was excused. (2 unexcused means I've failed the semester). I told her how I had been sick, my grandfather had almost died twice, how my dad had to have surgery, how I found a lump in my breast, how I hadn't had my period in 3 months...all because of stress. I then told her how I wasn't expecting her sympathy...and she said..."Well, that's just life, Dawn."

Well, no shit sherlock.

Anyway, I'm freaking out because if they decide to fail me...guess what? I'm out of nursing school for good. I only have ONE semester left and was supposed to graduate in MAY!!!! She said that she and John had to discuss this without me and that they were going to call and verify that I was at the doc's office b/c my excuses were turned in too late!!!

I don't know what to do. I'm really really scared...and have cried more today than I have in the past year, I think.

Cure said:
How are your grades?

Exactly.

If your grades are good, you can tell them to fuck off. They are doing this underhand shit because they feel it is "proper protocol".

Hell I once missed two finals and submitted a doctors excuse for it, even though I swam the same day at our school's tourney.

If your grades are in gear and you are not on academic probation, you can say FUCK YOU loud and clear.

My grades are passing. The thing is...with nursing...it's usually those whose grades aren't as good that have better clinical skills.

That is what ticks me off. I KNOW how to take care of my patients. I KNOW why they are getting the medications that they are an. I KNOW what their symptoms are. I am very good with them and with the families. I have exibited that all semester long. I have been very professional...and never late.

I didn't think that this would have that much of an impact on me...because like I said...I didn't feel like I did anything wrong. I mean...I honestly feel that I haven't backslided at all because of it. I actually know quite a bit more than the other students in my class (about techniques for doing things to patients...and procedures and what not) because I worked in an ICU all summer.

It's just really frustrating...and I'm about to pull my hair out.

Wow, I don't use this word often, but what a CUNT!!!!! Let me put it to you this way, I'm no lawyer, but I'd say you already have a decent base for a harassment/unfair treatment lawsuit. The fact that you have a doc's excuse should show that you weren't lying. As far as her cold, shitty "that's life" comment, that is just more fuel to the fire. Tell you what, if they decide to fail you out because of this, get a lawyer, and go to the Dean of Students, and/or the head of the school. Colleges HATE lawsuits, and odds are they'll back off if threatened with legal action... Does this woman not like you??? WTF is her problem???

PAY HER OFF....THATS WHAT I WOULD DO.

.....MONEY ALWAYS TALKS...TAKE OUT A LOAN IF YOU HAVE TO.......5 GRAND USUALLY DOES THE TRICK.

WHY DO WORK WHEN YOU DONT HAVE TO?

I don't know! Thing is...she is the most confrontational professor we have. I swear...I think she's out to fail us all.

A lawsuit would be crazy...wow.

OKay...this is specifically what my syllabus says about missing clinicals.

Clinical attendance is mandatory. The course faculty will make the determination of an excused absence from clinical lab. A physician's excuse my be required before a student may re-enter the clinical area. Clinical absences (excused or unexcused) seriously jeopardize satisfactory completion of the course. If absence from clinical lab is absolutely unavoidable, the following procedure must be followed:

1. Notify clinical facility by 6:00am. "okay...I did not only that, but notified my professor before 6"

2. Give your name, school, unit, and assigned client. "I didn't need to do that because I talked with my professor."

4. Notify course faculty providing the date, time, and name of person receiving message.

Oh, also, my professor asked me how I was able to get my paper done by yesterday. I told her that I wasn't about to go back to the doctor and them tell me that nothing was wrong with me....just to get an excuse for the paper. I NEEDED to get that paper done. So...I sucked it up and did it. In 3 days....and she said..."WOW" like that's unreal that you could finish it in that amount of time. I made the comment that I thought it was a good paper and she said, "Well, that has yet to be evaluated because we just got them yesterday."

She made me want to scream. I haven't heard from them yet.

Be prepared to go over her head if necessary.

I think she may be trying to impart to you the importance of the program and regularily attending etc, and this is her little scare tactic with which to do it. On the off chance it is not, I would be sure to be ready to go to her boss with the facts.

Night Fly.....as an college administrator I can tell you without reservation that this is bullshit and she is full of it.

There is a percentage of the course attendance you can miss without penalty. If your grades are there, you can tell them to fuck off.

In higher education, its best to go to the top and work your way down. Make an appointment with the Pres. or a Board Trustee.
You've worked too hard, paid enough money and too close to graduation to be crying about it. Time to get mean.

Let them know that they're not doing you any favors....you PAY them.

She's on a power trip....I see it everyday. Call her bluff. Do your homework and find out the rules and quote them to her verbatim.

Oh and use the words "PAID registrant" and "taxpayer"....

Good luck......

Carefully go over their heads. Who can you talk to? A dean? A department director? Use some tact whie doing this, but go over their heads and explain the situation to someone who may have some power. You may make an aliy who can help. Worst case senario, go as high as you can, screw tact, and draw blood because the situation is bullshit.

[/B]1. Notify clinical facility by 6:00am.[/B] So you followed the procedure for excused absence? How is she saying your late?

If you have one semester left and they are threatening to fail you, I would go to the dean, the president, contact lawyers and the media, harass that skank of a professor and leave NO STONE UNTURNED. If you have a doctor's note that should be more than sufficient. Who the fuck does she think she is, Janet Reno??? Worst case scenario, you might have to withdraw from the semester.

Do you have any pictures in uniform?

I agree.
I think CNN, the Wall Street Journal and maybe even cspan would be VERY interested in this scoop.

She sounds like a bona fide bizzatch. But I dont think you need to worry, they will contact your doc, he/she will tell them that yes you have been sick.. case closed.
Good luck NF.

Another thing I'd do, in prep for the next encounter, would be to speak with a lawyer. Many lawyers offer a free "first time" consultation to get you in the door and interested in pursuing legal action.

Have yourself one of those freebie consultations. The next little meeting with these profs, mention that "well I have spoken to my lawyer about this situation and he/she suggests 'such and such as my options." Watch them go EEEEK!!

Wow...thank you all so much for these suggestions.

Zebo-you are right. There is a percentage that I can miss without penalty. I mean...there are other people who have missed two days of clinical because of VACATION!!! I was SICK!!! And those people's missed days were EXCUSED!!!

It's quite ridiculous. I have done my work...and shown them that I had excuses for missing class/clinicals. Her saying that I didnt' get them in ON TIME??? I didn't realize that I had a time limit on that. She said that I should have communicated better. I called them everytime I missed something...before and after...just to make sure and double check.

It really sucks to know that my college career lies on the head of a power hungry professor. She can't teach worth crap anyway...

Another bad thing about nursing school is that all of the professors stick together. Even the dean of nursing school used to teach one of my classes this year until the other professor took them both over. So...I don't know how well going to her would go because I think they are really good friends or something.

You know...she was talking to me like I was an idiot...like I didn't understand the importance of missing those classes. BUT, if she was as observant as she should have been...she should know that I know my stuff and that I do know what I'm doing.

Silent Method---I don't understand how she is saying that I was late, either. EVERY single time I talked to her I told her that I had the doctor's note but haven't had a chance to give it to John yet. HER excuse was..."Well, you could have brought it to ME to give to HIM...but you just waited too late."

I honestly feel like I am about to be punished for something when I thought that I was doing everything the right way. MY clinical professor said maybe 5 words the whole time. He is the more leniant one so I'm hoping that maybe he will be a good influence on my other professor.

Gosh...I am still sick to my stomach about it all.

I'm sure you're going to come out on top of this. I'd just be prepared to raise hell just in case. Like Zebo said, it's a power trip. In her mind, if she decides to boot you, her "power" over you will end. If she "finds it within her heart to give you a second chance," she can rationalize that you will feel that you "owe" her, extending her twistted sense of power over you. Just a theory, but I think you'll be fine.

TEXgrl said:
so, when are they going to let you know something?

I don't know. They just said they would call me and let me know....they never said when.

Silent Method...I truly hope that you are right. I would be devestated if I got kicked out of nursing school with only one semester left. I know this is my calling and it's what I want to do, but if they fail me....I will never go back to nursing school.

Nightfly,

Zebo hit the nail on the head. That is the deal. There must be some underlying reason why the person would want to intentionally want to hurt you that way. Issues. I would bring this matter up to HER superior. I would attack the source directly and gat face to face.

Represent yourself strong, proud, and intelligent as you are. You will win.

Have confidence in your abilities and your future as a nurse. No one knows the potential you have to the extent that you do!

Small comfort for now....

Those that can....DO. Those that can't.....TEACH.

This lady might know her nursing in the technical area, but I'd bet she wouldn't last 3 months in any actual job with her "bedside manner."

I'm sure it would work out. Holy terror can be poured on on the college over such a BS reason to drop you (given these circumstances).

Walk on eggshells for the last semester, and take pride that you're 1,000x the nurse this woman could ever be.

Don't think about giving up, you're so close! AND you are RIGHT! If you are really worried, I would do two things for sure.

#1, write down EVERYTHING regarding this situation. What the circumstances of the absence were, who you called, what they said, the meeting, what was said there, the rules as given to you, etc., etc. Write down anything about this you can think of - including information from others who were excused from the clinicals so they could go play.

#2, see a lawyer. Hell, you can get a free consultation as I said. Pulling out the 'ol "I've spoken to my lawyer" has worked wonders for me in the past. I you pull that out, that'll probably be the end of it. Worst case scenario, I'd be willing to use said lawyer.

Come on now, you've worked hard and it's about to pay off! Don't let somebody take away your rights because she's jealous that you're prettier than her!

Those that can....DO. Those that can't.....TEACH.
Sounds good in the narrow regard to bad "teachers," but in reality that's not a very clever statment.

Why in the hell did you miss 2 weeks of school? Those are poor excusses. I had mono just a few months ago, plus a shit load of other things happen to me and I STILL made it to school. With my case the tests for mono came back POSITIVE by the way. Maybe you are not cut out to be a nurse. The general rule of thumb for college students is that if you CAN be there you WILL be there. Unless you are held at gun point or your legs are broken you peal your sick ass off the bed and drag your miserable, wishing you where dead, self to college and be there.

p.s. Knock off the pitty part, it wont work in nursing school and it won't work in real life.

Silent Method said:

Actually, his statement was pretty true. The majority of my teachers have not worked a real job in their life. They have no clue what actually working in the field is about and their teaching methods reflect that. Most teachers such as this just go through the motions of throwing up a few powerpoint presentations or lecturing direclty out of the book. These professors are useless and are one of the main reasons that college is pointless.

The best teachers I have ever had were the ones who have worked in the field for many years or are still working in that field. These teachers give real life experiences that actually open your mind and allow you to learn something instead of just memorizing bullshit for your next test.

Nightfly, I wish you the best with this and hope everything works out. As mentioned before, I would be prepared to go above these professors' heads. It is bullshit that they would do this to someone who has one semester left.

Its not the Marine Corp Training camp, Mr. Stuart, its an institute of higher learning for training nurses, which we desperately need. The point is not her attendance record, rather the behaviorof an insecure bully who is acting this way to justify her position.
In case you haven't read the news lately we have a NURSING SHORTAGE. We are here to help a friend and build her up, not tear her down.
If you can't contribute to that, then go back to surfing thewiggles.com.......putz.

i don't know about you sir, but if i were sick in the hospital, the last person i would want taking care of me is a nursing student with mono........true there may be some things you could suffer thru doing if you are sick, but taking care of sick people who may have weak immune systems and risking getting them sicker is not a very good thing to do.

p.s. hurray for you for getting POSITIVE on your mono test.

People don't understand the Nursing professors CAN actually be the devil...they really do not till they have been in this situation.

They actually DO have a lot of power and controll over your grades...trust me...I know.

Nightfly, good luck in resolving this situation.

Now getting off the topic a bit here but that is bullshit. Teaching is not an easy thing to do. I teach science now but I spent 6 years doing research prior to this. In those six years I amassed more publications in quality journals than most people who have done the job for twice as long......I could do the job. I now teach.....and it isnt because I couldn't do the job. I know numerous people in the same position.

In higher education the people who do the teaching have usually spent alot of time in the job that they teach about.......unfortunately they haven't always spent much time learning how to teach effectively.

this is college. things like this are simple. all you need to do, is kiss a lot of ass with these fucks. if that doesn't work, go above them, and if that doesnt work go above that person. sooner or later, if you bitch loud and hard enough they will cave, believe me. i've been in a similar situation.

I'm going to sum it all up in one outline considering the blitz of moronic replies I received.

a) Your pissing/moaning party makes me sick

b) She could have/should have attended class everyday.

c) I stated my test for mono was positive to show I did really have it and know what it feels like, not because I was bragging. Try comprehending that with your 2 brain cells

d) one nurse isn't going to make or break a current shortage "putz"

Thank you all for your replies. :)

First off...

Ian Stuart...you can say what you want, that's fine. If you will refer to one of my previous posts I specifically stated that I wasn't asking for sympathy. You don't know how sick I was...and obviously you don't realize how stupid it would have been for me to attend clinicals being sick myself. Like TEXgrl said, you don't go to the hospital or work (at the hospital) if YOU are sick. Why? Because the people you take care of are WAY sicker than you, and they can/will most likely catch anything you've got. Sorry you had mono and good for you for getting over it. I'm thankful that I didn't, honestly. Don't speak of the nursing shortage when you know nothing about it. It's the worse it has been in years and the healthcare field will probably not recover from it in a long time. It's professors like her that make people not want to go into it.

Everyone else...
I just talked to my clinical professor. I paged him and asked him what the deal was. He said that my other professor had called my doc asking for him to fax over a copy of the excuses I had. He was there until 2pm EST and she didn't say anything. He told me that it was safe to assume that nothing would come of this and that her primary concern was that I had missed two weeks of clinicals.

I think I'm okay for now, but I'm still going to stay on guard. You never know with the other lady.

Thanks again...and when I get recharged I'll send karma out to all you crazy folks!

GO OVER THAT BITCHES HEAD. SHE IS CRAZY AND PURPOSELY TRYING TO FUCK WITH YOU. GO AS FAR OVER HER HEAD AS YOU NEED TO. THIS WILL AFFECT YOU THE REST OF YOU LIFE. WHO IS SHE TO DO THAT???

Actually, no. Good question, though. I had the flu shot on Oct. 11. I don't think this was even related. I could be wrong, though.

the finding out if ur in the wrong, appealing to the male proffesor to help and if u are screwed both ways, seeing a lawyer sounds good.

if they do fail you.....and nothing can be done, go to the papers if u have to. you;ve worked far too hard to let someone who by the sounds of it is trying to compensate for some inadequacy in their life set back urs

Hey IanStuart:
people like you are why I'm losing faith in our education systemsyou have to have more common sense than to send a sick nurse in to deal with sick patients, this reminds me of that quiz where 89% of Americans don't know where the USA is

reason I ask is that the "powers that be" have a strong record of "experimenting" with people when giving shots.

"Emerging Viruses" is.......interesting. I think it prove that AIDS is a man made virus and was shot injected into large numbers of the gay population in New York and San Fransisco among others. They thought they were getting some other shot of course.

Sounds far fetched I know but it has 50 pages of references to back up the research.

I'd be very pissed if I was some people.

I fucking hate college professors. It's like each one gets off kicking you a few times on the road to getting that piece of paper.

I hope everything turns out ok Night Fly! :spin:

Another serious question, there is a heart disorder where the blood flow from one ventricle to the other is affected due to a hole, the symptoms are a high resting pulse rate, poor cardio performance and light headedness. Do you know what the medical terminology for this is?

You are such a sweetheart for asking! :)

I already typed in a previous post that I had paged my clinical professor at 5 on Friday afternoon and he told me that if I hadn't heard anything by then....it was a fairly safe assumption that nothing was going to come of it.

I went to class this morning and she didn't look at me....or say anything to me. I figured if something was up then she would have asked to see me again after class.

I guess I am just going to lay low for now...considering I only have two weeks of the semester left. I just hope that I make it...I'm ready to be stress free for a few weeks.

Thanks again for asking girl...I was going to give you some super karma but I must spread it around again. :)

Good news!

Lay low for two weeks and get the hell outta there. It wouldn't hurt to discreetly ask your other professor for updates and insights.
This woman sounds like the kind that could jump up and bite you in the ass at the last minute.

Don't let your guard down.

I really hope everything works out. (If it does you can work it back in.) Sorry, old joke.......

You could be talking about a ventricular septal defect. That is where there is a hole between the ventricles of the heart where there normally is not one. Normally, the blood flows from the right atria to the right ventricle...then to the left atria and the left ventricle.

With this heart disease, instead of all of the blood going from the left ventricle into the aorta, some of it flows into the right ventricle because of a hole between the two. This causes oxygenated blood to be mixed with deoxygenated blood in the pulmonary artery.

The symptoms that you gave are very common symptoms for most heart defects.

With VSD, you can hear a characteristic murmur when listening to the heart.

Is there another abbreviated name for this like ABS/ASB or a shunt. Does it require surgery to fix?

You mean an atrial bilateral shunt? This does require surgery and is used to redirect the blood flow of the heart when it is not going to the right place.
