well i'm back from my deployment (stateside vacation, whatever u call it) and back in la! Back to rock staw Razor!
Went shopping right away. After much perusing at dpreview.com
I bought the :
CANON POWERSHOT S5 IS 8.0 MEGAPIXEL DIGITAL CAMERA
info and video here
8Mp (wish it was 10, but it'll suffice), external lenses, HISTOGRAPH! built in screen!!, easly changeable apetures (so handy), iso speeds (handy), display of "line of thirds" grids (real handy), red-eye (tho all us pro shooters take it off), white balance, auto-set for everything from sun, night, beach, snow, forest, sports, etc.! SD/SDC cards. 4 aa's. Shoe for external fill flash. Gonna get a nice wide angle-lens (i love taking scenery, wildlife, artsy pictures), stiching, FLIP OUT TWIST lcd!
Millions of more features. This is the best camera for the buck. $400 at best buy, $50 ins., and about $300 or so for accessories. $1000 for a pro camera.
Not bad. I can use it for 1) casting calls 2) location shots 3) continuity shots 4) wardrobe shots 5) publicity stills 6) hobby use 6) vacations 7) fake pictures for ef, etc.
I'm a photoshop cs3 guru, so i can always take them and use levels, curves, heals, unsharp masks, lighting, hue/saturations, etc. - and make them look spectacular.
Me happy. I LOVE Canon products. Canon HV20 for behind the scenes hd/footage and vacations, this camera, and the almighty Canon XH A1 for film usage.
You can probably find it cheaper on ebay as well (just be careful, at best buy i can get a warranty). If u want a nice pro camera - get this.
The manual kicks arse!!!
