at 172lbs you dnt need to be worrying about carbs.
you need to be worrying about hitting the weights intensly, consistantly, and heavy.
you are going to need a crap ton of carbs to not only push you through your workouts but also to repair and help build muscles.
also you can add in healthy EFAs with some meals for extra cals.
EFAs will help lube your joints and give you extra energy.
consistantly eat:
quality protein (red meat, chicken, eggs, tuna, turkey)
low gi carbs (sweet tater, oats, rice, potatoes, wheat bread)
healthy fats (peanut butter, almonds, fish oil, whole eggs)

search the web for body building diets. if your trying to build mass you need a high protein/carb diet. my guess for you as a place to start would be 600-700 carbs and 300+ protein between 6 or more meals is best. but look into when to eat what. simple and complex carbs need to be consumed at the right times. one more thing big size does not come lean.
