My damn car won't start. Is it the battery?

It happened 2 weeks ago and I was late for work. It eventually started. That's the only time it's happened except for today. The inside lights come on and it clicks when I try to start it. The battery is only about 6 months old, but I did spill some acid out of it before I put it in.

Could also be your distributor isnt recharging you battery, sounds like the battery is dead though

I added water. Still no go. How would you know if it was the alternator?

lololololol the altenantor charges the battery , not the distributor ...stick to heart surgery BB lol

Check the alternator and the polls... that happend to me with my explorer and i had to change my polls.

might just be the starter
it would more than likely be the selenoid for the starter , thats what is clickin you can jump it with a screwdriver and see if thats what is bad .....

Ive had the alternator go out a few times in my car life history. Also, I had a car that the door wouldnt close properly and itd drain the battery, could be a bunch of stuff like that. Also had batteries that just went bad

will you check my poll ???

i checked it... still needs growth ;)

Man I'm ignorant about cars. I'm gonna have to call someone so I can get to work tomorrow.

growth is fine , you lacked the stimulation factor

damn

:worried:

Sometimes the battery terminals connectors can move or become loose and they will not have a good connections. Check those and if they are tight, see if you can move them just a little and try it. That has worked for me numerous times.

Also, the solenoid switch might be going bad and that is causing the battery not to provide the power it needs to start your car.

If you do add water, add distilled water to it. Regular water is not good for a battery.

Thanks everyone.

How do you check them. LOL. I'll just have to take it in if I can get it started.

All i had to do was clean them, they wern't getting a good connection. If you pull them off the battery you will be able to tell. I'm sure the way i cleaned them was very dangerous.. LOL.. i just scraped them with a knife.

I had to call my brother. I hate putting people out.

The neighbor just gave me a jump. Since it started, it must be the battery and not the alternator?

Not necessarily the battery might keep dying because the alternator isn't charging it.

If it was the alternator, it wouldn't stay running, so you couldn't drive to work. Take a multimeter, with the car off & the meter set to DC volts (20V range), it shold be about 12.5-13.5 Volts. any lower than 12.5 & there could be a prob with battery. If the voltage is good, & the car starts quick with a boost, not labouring, then it's prob battery terminals (although that would affect charging too), or starter.
I'd put my money on the starter.

Well, it doesnt mean one way or the other in my experience. Sometimes a red dummy light would go off on the console saying "charge" or something if I recall.

The battery could have died like if you left the dome light on by accident or perhaps the battery is not functioning properly.

The alternator is what recharges the battery and keeps it topped off and ready to start. It could be the battery not holding the charge or the alternator not recharging it. Hard to say given the battery is new.

We have tire shops that do that testing for free here, they do all the little stuff like that to keep customers returning so itd be simple to find out.

Easy steps would to have a tuneup done I spose and tell them what happened could be wires, improper seating of the wires, alternator etc....

Could just be a short somewhere draining the battery. Are you sure you didnt leave any lights on. Id just see if it happens again. I had a car door that didnt shut properly that kept killing my battery, new battery too. Also had a bad alternator and another time this guy said that the water level in my battery was too low

If its the alternator, things will run slow, like your power windows etc etc, also on mine, the radio stopped working and then when i turned it off, it wouldnt come back on.
The battery takes power from other things to recharge itself when the alternator isnt doing its job
My battery stopped working, wed charge it up and then 2 hours later it would be dead again....and i had to buy a new one

Fu**! It died again. I tried to leave and as soon as I turned the headlights on, it died. Now I'm screwed.

id get the battery checked and if its not low or whatever they call it, its prob the alternator
mine died at night when i was driving it down a long dark road and i had to walk to this old mans house and use his phone:(

if it died when you turned your headlights on , its the alternator....it was tryin to use the battery for voltage to run everything and there wasnt enough there ....change your alternator bro

Exactly what Ive been saying all along. Just messed up distributor with alternator to begin with.
That sux. I was on Mt St Helens when my alternator went out and it was getting dark, totally freaking sucked. Keeping the lights off praying we'd make it down

It was the battery. They tested it and it was bad. Gave me a new one for free. I'm getting my brakes and front end alignment done now. I might go see a lawyer also since I'm off for the day. I'm gonna sue my ex for child support.
