My car broke, advice needed

it was a 1996 ford contour, 134k miles. failed inspection in about every way possible. I need a car, im 18, and i can make about 250-350 dollars a week. I need to buy a used car to replace this and would like to spend under 1500 dollars. my dad can snag a geo metro for about 1k (we are trying to bring him down to 800) but im 6 feet tall and im thinking that car is too small. however the metro does get about 40 mpg :) I think i could probably sell my contour for parts but im not positive so depending on how much i could get varies on how much money i can spend. i have about 550 right now saved up plus any money i can get from parts and by this time next week ill haev at least another 250. so thats the 800 right there and maybe more if i can get money for parts. I need recomendations on where to make the most of my broken car and smoe great budget cars to look at. p.s i want a manual!!!!

Don't buy a car if it's just gonna shit out on you in a year.

When I was in highschool I worked out a deal w/ my Dad for a loan to get a '96 t-bird - it cost me around $9,000 but I still have it today and it's gonna last me quite a few more years

I've got a 91 Blazer sitting out back I'll sell to you for $300. Get some fiberhair and slap it in the one rocker panel, a fuel line, and some minor odds and ends for inspection. If you are so inclined, you can even clean out the vacuum line that runs from the transfer case to the front differential so the 4wd engages when you need/want it.

It isn't pretty, it's got 170K miles, but it also has the 4.3L V6. We had an Astro van with the same engine and it seized at 242K miles. The only reason it died was lack of maintenance for half of it's life.

I'll even put a CD player in and Audiobahn 4x6s up front, free of charge.

I drove my Geo 50k miles in a year, no mechanical probs, but I slammed it into a jeep one wet day. I waved goodbye, and collected the insurance.

Awesome, that's a great ROI right there. The best way to say bye to a car is with a check from the other guy's insurance in your hand :)

You would be set down here because there is no vehicle inspections..

Tons of crap heaps rolling on the roads ready to kill someone..

You said you got $800, that gives you extra cash to make it pass.

Or you just find a backwoods shop, pay the guy an extra $20, and you'll have an instant inspection passer ;)
