So no shit, taking off from Tokyo yesterday we just start to lift off and the right engine on the 474-400 starts on fire. Some loud noises and it goes out but the plane is having a hard time with altitude. Then the fire was back and the plane was still all over the place(like turbulance). Fire goes out and back on a couple of times and we finally reach an altitude were the pilot levels it out and we fly on one engine. Then they just start dumping fuel out of the tanks, you could see it just pouring out of the tanks. They come on the intercom and tell us they lost the right engine and had to dump fuel so we can make the landing. They circle the plane and make a rough landing with all the fire trucks and ambulances lines up. Plane comes to a stop, they bus us off and put us up for the night at the Hilton. Now I just have to hope I can get out Today!

Pics?

Did you fuck the flight attendant while everybody was looking at the engine on fire?

Did you get to slide down the inflatable slide?

The chick(not hot) on the window seat 2 over from me got some pics, she said she would bluetooth them to me this morning when we go back, I didn't have my camera. They didn't break out the slide when we landed since the fire was out. It was a bit funny coming off the plane with all the fire trucks around, kinda surreal. I popped 3 ambien when we boarded so I was in a trance, I should have been sleeping. Delta was really good about it and stayed calm but the pax were pretty freaked out. The girl right next to me had never flown, she didn't speak english though so I couldn't mess with her.

I had just watched fight club and the first thing I thought was "does your life insurance really pay double if you die while on business". I think it would have been worse without the ambien for sure

I wouldn't have been able to get off the plane if I had just taken 3 ambien.

I had a huge headache and could hardly stay awake. I'm still not sure if it was all real or not but the fact I'm in a hotel and not the States makes me think it was. I pushed hard to get out this morning so I am taking a different aircraft but I really feel for the people who have to get back on the same plane with the differnt engine they put on overnight. They said the FAA has to check it but still

Well you can look up Delta flight 56 out of Tokyo at 330 on sat. I guess the delta after actions report stated that a compressor went out when the pilot first applied thrust taking off. The first burst of fire was from the ignition of the fuel when the engine restarted, it then proceeded to do that 3 more times as we lifted off. There estimate is that if we wouldn't have gotten the initial thrust from it then the plane wouldn't have made the take off. This was all from a Delta employ who read the report last night.
I still find it crazy that we just dumped the fuel tanks while in the air. It was a 13 hr flight, so it was a lot of fuel they dumped to make the landing but I guess that is policy so they can land light. Anyway I'm flying American to LA in 30 minutes so hopefully better luck.

jesus h man, glad you and the rest of the crew are OK

i've been doing plenty of travel and i know for a fact i would have shit my pants

i hope you get home soon, i know how much that sucks

A 474? I've never heard of such a plane. The last time I flew that flight it was on an MD-11, but I think they've switched to a Boeing 777 (a Dreamliner).

Nevertheless, coughing an engine on takeoff or landing is a dangerous thing. I'm surprised the pilot was able to gain altitude with it. Dumping of fuel is a standard procedure in any emergency landing for a commercial jet.

When I was a resident, we coughed an engine on final approach to a hospital delivering a trauma patient. We had a hard landing and had to evacuate the helicopter. It was a scary experience to say the least.
