JohnnyO, I almost went all the way, so to speak.
This is a picture I took of my campsite at Bahia Honda (mm 37 overseas highway) last week.
They have better ones right on the Atlantic Ocean, with sandy beaches.
Snorkleing is OK, and lots of conch, of course.
In the winter the waiting list is like 4 months, but there are plenty of other places.
It wasn't very gay right there, mostly smart, 30 something, bohiemian type couples, and lots of Jimmy Buffet wanna-bes.

It's a State Park in the lower keys, almost to the end (Key West)
There is all sorts of campgrounds in the Keys but a customer who was a salt water aquirium/snorkling freak kept hypeing it so I wanted to check it out.

BTW: the Northeast is a good place to be in the summer, compared to Florida with it's smokey fires and 98% and 98 degree days....

You have to walk way out there, to get in over your head, it's not cold like the ocean by NY, but if you go deep you feel some cold "undercurrents".......Lots of weeds and mud compared to say Fort Lauderdale etc. but there are sandy areas. Your so far out there, you start getting paranoid about sharks or something.

The appeal is that it's not so congested. and it's connected by bridge as opposed to, say , the Bahamas.
