at least for me it does. hearing a song transports me to a different place... they are anachronistic... they pull me from the current and deposit me wherever they wish.

almost always the moment I am brought to is either dancing or driving, because when I do either of those I utterly cathect the music.

I don't know why I am writing this, but the song I was just listening to -- "Mrs.. Jackson" -- is definitely one of those...

I never use a thesaurus... I write like I talk...

BUT, when I was in high school I took the sat's and received a perfect score in math and the reading comprehension half of the verbal... I missed practically every vocab word. since then I have been anal about looking up every word I don't know and making it a part of my every-day lexicon... if that explains why I am compelled to use words you don't understand...

I don't have trouble understanding big words. Unless they are longass medical terms like -glutamyltransferase and such.
I read more books than anybody I know, vocabulary is ingrained, if not used often.

But anachronistic (chronologically misplaced) does not fit your statement, and cathect means to invest emotional energy into, which does flow well for some reason in your usage.

If somebody says "That is Anachronistic". They are saying it (whatever is in question) is portrayed in a time that it did not exist. The Genie in Aladin often did some pretty Anachronistic things. They are misrepresented in a wrong time frame. hence chronalogically misplaced. Saying the song takes you away to another place is not the same as saying a song is anachronistic. Which in the way you used it caused me to think that was how you were meaning it to be used.

Cathect, I must admit, I had never heard of before. So maybe that is why it looked wrong. It just seemed to stick out like a swollen thumb.
It fits I guess. I am just being nit-picky, no offense intended.

cathect doesn't exist in the dictionaries of most spell checker software, either... one of my economics teachers was fond of it...

i can understand why anachronistic was misleading. i envy you for being a reader. my attention span is far to short for anything longer than magazine articles (props to atlantic monthly, the new yorker, and scientific american for keeping me sane)...

if i read more my usage would probably be better.

Every little bit helps. (on reading that is) I grew up with books so I guess that is why my attention span can handle it.

I read Scientific American also! Great mag, but renew is comming up and can't spare the cash. Guess I will have to read it at the library or bookstore.

I have too many magazine subscriptions. Sci-American, Astronomy, Popular Science, Maxim, Archeology Odyssey, and a magazine called Military history. With the exception of Maxim, they are all geek magazines.
