Muscle pump

I was just wondering if someone could enlighten me on something? I moved up in wieght on the EZ-Bar french press from 35s and a 5 to 45s. I do the same reps (10) I go down just as far as the previous weight. But i do not get a pump with the 45s( none at all) But with the 35s and 5's i get an insane pump. Why is that? Thanks to all.

Before I go any further, I do want to say that a pump means absolutely nothing in terms of long term progress with respect to both size and strength....But, to answer your question, the only thing I can think of is to ask if your form is exactly the same with the new weight, an alteration of form, whether you got sloppier, or used less triceps and turned it into a hybrid pullover-type exercise could be the case.

I dunno man . If I'm not pumped then I don't feel I've done what i came to the gym to do...

My advice would be to change excersizes. Do cable pushdowns or rope pushdowns or kickbacks

My thoughts align with BiggT's, are you sure that you're doing the exercise in the same way under the new load?

Another thought is that the extra load has caused extra muscle fibres to kick in and that the earlier weight was really just too light for you and you've been doing little besides muscle-spinning with it.

Check your form. If you workout with someone ask them to monitor you when doing it with the "lighter" weight, and then with the "heavier" weight.

Biggt is correct. Pumps are worthless when it comes to determine if an exercise is building mass (which I assume is your goal). All a pump tells you is that there is a lot of blood in the area...doesn't tell you if you are building mass. Go squat 90% of your max for 5 reps and you won't get a pump in your legs, but you can bet your ass your body will grow after a while. I can go to tricep pushdowns till I am blue in the face and get a great pump, but doesn't mean mass will come. Sure it feels good to get a pump and know that your muscles are all swollen for a few minutes, but it is by no means a indication of mass building.

If you go to the gym to get stronger, bigger, or perform better you should change your criteria of success as the pump really means nothing to a stimulative workout (neither does DOMS/soreness BTW). The best evaluation will be progression in the key lifts over time (i.e. best set of 8 or whatever in the squat, bench, row, pull) and if bigger is your goal, watch those and keep track of your diet and body mass period to period. If you just happen to like feeling your muscles temporarily pumped, that's a different story.

I do watch myself in the mirrior while i do the french press. Thank you for all of your input. It does make sense. I use the same form by going a tad bit slower so i can control the weight. I am like gjohnson5 though i feel like i didnt do enough if i dont have a pump. But i guest i shouldnt think like that since i never get a pump while i work out my legs. Thanks again.

If you want the pump for psychological reasons, do one of two things:

1) Get over the belief that you need it

or

2) Do some high rep (15-20) work for the bodyparts you want to feel a pump in at the end of your training session, preferably in a circuit style. Shouldn't interfere with much of anything.

i usually start off with cable pressdowns for warm up before going to french press. 3x15, i was starting off with reverse presses but i think i broke my wrist playing football(never went to the hospital, wife wouldnt let me play in the playoffs if it was broke so i said fuck it) still aches from time to time though. I usually do pressdowns 3x15, reverse pressdowns 3x10, and finish with French presses 3x10. i would change it up now and then but i have great luck with it so far. i will do dips on chest day now and then.

ive used it twice. the first time Holy Shit i put at least 15lbs on bench ( i say atleast cause i was not sure were i was and just kept on adding weight) and my focus was awsome. the second and last time i tried it i got nothing. same with the creatines. I used to use the EAS phosphagen HP for probably 2 years( cycleing on and off of course) that dont work and ive ried several more and nothing. I am on NO xplode right now and not sure yet. I did use the MHP Tbomb 2. That was great for strength. I started on a low iso row machine with 2 45s( 3x10-12) by the end of the month i was doing 3 45s and a 10 and a 5 for the same reps. also went to 4 45s and did it 8 times. I am going to start that Biotest Tribex tomorrow. wish me luck
