Mr.X, Bananas Post Workout???

Mr.X, is it a good idea to eat a Banana or two with your Post Workout Drink? I know Bananas are a high-GI food so it seems logical. But, I could be TOTALLY wrong. If anyone knows, I know it would be you. What do you think?

I wouldn't use fruit post-workout (it's LOW-gi by the way), I wouldn't even touch fruit unless it totally necessary.

Most of the time I eat a bananna PO. It is high in Potassium which I believe helps to reduce soreness (or something in that effect, I am not 100% sure). I don't think it will hurt you. After all, it is only ~25-30g of carb Post Workout.

That's just my 2 cents worth.

what about muscle cramps
i feel potassium has a great effect on preventing muscle cramps - i eat 1 or 2 banana's before tennis or basketball

many bodybuilding ideas have been around for YEARS and have absolutely no scientific proof. It does not change the fact that people still practice and believe in them. Mr. X's ideas are based on studies that have statistically proven themselves.

what mr. x was referring to is soreness from working out which is a completely different monster from cramping up. cramping up results from an imbalance in the sodium/potassium/calcium ratios. excessive sweating can lead to these imbalances. thats why good old gatorade has electrolytes (salts).

Muscle cramps are usually attributed to dehydration. I would increase water intake w/ some multi-vit/min if anything.

when would it be necessary?

Mr. X...not sure that you answered this but I am curious because I tend to be pretty wiped after my workouts...and I LOVE bananas! :insane:

I would think fruit is 'necessary' when there's absolutely nothing else to eat that's better. So if you had to choose between a banana and a donut, I would go with the banana. If you had to choose between a banana and going without any food, I would choose the banana. If you had to choose between a banana and a can of tuna and a big plate of veggies, I would choose the tuna/veggies!

I agree wholeheartedly :).....for me, fruits are last resort....

I eat two or three bananas every day. I can't help it. I LOVE them. I really have a sweet tooth so I need to eat either lots of fruit every day or I turn to chocolate and junk food.

i did a CKD diet last spring with some heavy workouts and hardcore cardio after lifting... i could feel my blood sugar really drop and by the time i was done with it all, i'd be soaking wet, pale and light headed. i'd usually eat an apple and it'd pick me up.

im doing the same routine now, would there be something better to eat right after the workout other than an apple if need be?

btw - i'd eat the apple at the gym and then as soon as i got home have my post workout shake of protein/creatine

on ckd, would it be beneficial to take ALA/R-ALA with the post workout shake to help shuttle things around? since no carbs are consumed there will be very little insulin spiked.
