Mozilla/Firefox and firewalls virus protection question.

So my SIL has mozilla and wants a Mcafee (sp?) virus protection or whatever they sell to protect her PC from viruses. It says she needs Microsoft IE to download the Mcafee, but I told her that she should stick with the Firefox.(just because I've heard it mentioned here a million times.) So... is there anything she can buy that would go with the firefox for virus protection?

Thanks

Argh! Mcafee and Norton are themselves a sort of virus. Both I found slow my system down and are just about impossible to uninstall without formatting the hard drive. I use AVG, has all the components you need, easy to use and uninstall and I there's a free version available. http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1

Cool, I have that is it AvanteGuard or something? It's like red and green colors? I should get rid of Norton; like you say it's slow.

Thanks bro. I looked at that site and sent it to her. Would the virus protection be enough ($35 roughly) for the 2 years I think, or does she need a virus protection with firewall option as well? This is for home use btw.

Does she have broadband internet? cable/dsl? Does she have a router like a Linksys between the modem and her computer? If yes then that's all she needs as far as firewalls go along with the firewall built into XP. not sure why she needs IE to download McAfee. Firefox won't run ActiveX scripts so she has less of a need for protection if she uses that instead of IE

Really sorry man, but I don't know what all that means. I get the idea though.

She has a cable high speed connection. Really fast, but I don't know what else she has after that. lol I guess cable modem. She has a pakage with her cable company with internet/cable tv/and phone for about $99/month.

I know she bought a basic (about a month or 2 ago $1000) Dell computer and has that high speed cable set up. So maybe that will tell you if she has the Linksys whatever. lol

So, should she get this virus thing? Firewall? Please use small words.

No worries. If it's just for home use then the free version will suffice --> http://free.grisoft.com/doc/Get+AVG+FREE/lng/us/tpl/v5 (scroll down)

Windows firewall is all I've ever used, never had any issues with it.

thanks bros. Emailed her both things. GREAT. I told her I'd get answers for her. You did'nt disappoint.

I also told her you guys were so good looking.

and sexy.
