I totally lucked out. Got queen size sofa bed and love seat, bedding, computer desk, complete set of flatware for 12, some cups, two lamps and gobs of clothing (98% with the tags still on) for about $300 - everything in excellent condition! The household had a few daughters that were teen/early 20's so I got mad jeans and shorts etc, most very good brands. Whatever is too small for me, my oldest daughter got and the few things that were too large went to my sister. I got soooooooo much stuff for my kids. All my kids are close in age and my 12 yr old and I are about the same size.
I now have the furnishings - meaning big stuff like beds (I have several children) and bookcases, table, some chairs etc for about 1K. A few things new, most bought second hand and a few "donated" items, and a wee bit of dumpster diving LOL. I can't wait to start stripping and painting other people's trash turning it into our treasures. Some of you have seen my artwork and know that it is really funky. I can't wait to tie-dye sheets for my kids' beds and just acquire funky odds and ends for us.
Our biggest expense will be a PC, scanner and printer. Not sure what I want to do with that yet, will be posting up asking guidancem (already have some input from a trusted friend who knows my needs, but still would like to pick your brains).
No TV - dont want one. No video/computer games - don't need those.
Still need a microwave and coffee table. Want to get one that is low to the ground so the kids can color and do homework as I use the kitchen table for making my artwork when we aren't eating.
Have gobs of new books for them and expect to get a whole bunch more. I doubt their prick father will allow them to bring any toys to my place, so I'll be hitting all the local yard sales for those. One thing I REALLY want to get us though is Scrabble. I may just break down and get that new even though it is an expensive game.
I'll probably have to get some area rugs as the place has all hardwood floors but I want to get neat stuff - not expensive - just neat.
I am closer to 40 than 30 and this will be my first place by myself EVER. I am looking forward to seeing how I can best "creatively" solve my home furnishing delimas inspite of financial limitations. I think this will a total gas and great experience for my kids for when they are old enough to leave home (for my oldest that will be in 6 years as I fully expect they will all attend universities abroad). They will see that regardless of how tight money is and how scary a situation, in the end we are like cats and land on our feet.
Soon we go back to court and all the wrongs will begin to be righted.
