mountain bike question

i went mountain biking today for the first time in awhile, and my 10 year old trek just isn't cutting it. does anybody know a good mountain bike for around $500 or less? also, are there any good online stores that might have better deals than a local bike shop might have?

Don't know of any place online, but i wouldn't reccomend that anyway, a lot of the times if you go to a local place they will let you test ride, and give you free tune ups on your brakes and gears for the first year.
as far as a good bike under 500, Raleigh ( I think thats how you spell it), has a bike w/ disc brake for 499, which is a steal, I believe it's the only bike under 899 that has disc brakes, and a hand welded frame.. I don't know the model number, but you can go to their website. They are gonna be your best bet, for a mountian bike in that price range.

specialized has some decent starter bikes too
