Motorcycle peeps and mechanics.... Question...

So I replaced the oil pan (sump) in my bike.... But in the process I acidentally severed the oil level sensor wire. I used connectors to secure it, filled the bike up with oil and fired it up. It sounds OK and idles fine, but the oil light stays on. It wasnt on at first, but about 1 minute into the warm up it came on, now when the key is on (not fired up) the oil light stays on.

Any ideas? If the oil sensor wire isnt getting a connection, would that cause the light to stay on? IS there any danger in me running the bike?

Would this somehow prevent oil from moving through the engine?

It has enough oil in it I believe...

Help? Ideas?

Do I need to get a new sensor?

Not sure about your bike but on mine (Harley) the oil light is on when the ignition is on and the bike isn't running.

As for the sensor

Yes if it isn't sending/recieving a signal the light will come on.

It will not effect the oil flow itself, but without a properly functioning alarm you won't know if a problem does occur.

Yes get a new sensor.

My guess would be that you shorted out the sensor. I would just replace it and the wire with new. The parts shouldn't be expensive. Better safe than sorry.

I agree. I just warmed it up again and noticed the oil level was low (not in the window) so basically I added enough up to the fill line and the light went off. I am going to take it for a ride tomorrow to see if everything is OK.

If it is a dysfunctional sensor, can I ride it the 5 miles to the shop to get it checked out?

Yes, all the sensor does is report flow/pressure. Oil should still be flowing. Quick way to check is this: Check level while cold before starting. Recheck after starting. The level should be lower as it has pulled oil into the engine.
