motivation and personal reflection

I want to be able to look back at this time in my life and know deep inside my
heart that captured everything I wanted out it-without any regrets. I want the
feeling of achievement. I want the feelings of pride, satisfaction, and
fulfillment!

I must set some ambitious goals and follow through if I want to experience
these awesome feelings. The paths or routes I choose to take, or exactly how I
plan go about attaining them, can differ greatly. The bottom line, however, is
that I want to feel a certain set of emotions when these next 21 days or so
are completed.

Why are you working so hard to reach your own personal goals? Why do you
continue to the things most people would not in order to achieve the physique
you really want? What are the emotions or feelings you are trying to attain?

Investing the time to understand why becoming successful at your bodybuilding
efforts will make the process much easier over time. Your journey will
undoubtedly become more enjoyable.

To get what we really want out of your bodybuilding endeavors, we all realize
we must first know exactly what it is you want to accomplish. In other words,
what's our ultimate goal? What's the final outcome we desire?

Many of us are already aware of what our goals are. Maybe we want to gain 10
pounds of muscle; lose 10 pounds of body fat; or a combination of both of
them. Maybe we want to break the 200, 300, or 400 bench press barrier; improve
a certain body part; or maybe just get to the gym on consistent basis. Maybe
we want to win our upcoming bodybuilding contest; look the best we've ever
looked on stage when our show comes around; or maybe just get the courage to
finally enter a contest before we are old and gray.

There's no doubt about the fact that we must clearly define what we want to
accomplish. But, to really get what we want in the most efficient manner
possible, we can help ourselves out tremendously by identifying the feelings
we are trying to attain as well. It sounds so simple, doesn't it? How many of
have really taken the time to clearly identify the feelings we after?

Do you want to feel successful? Happy? Powerful? Strong? Passionate?
Disciplined? These are all feelings-not specific actions like benching 300
pounds or getting to the gym every day this month.

We are all training, eating, and living this lifestyle because, although the
reasons why may be different, we are striving for certain feelings. We may not
be doing so in a totally conscious and fully concerted manner, but we are
indeed doing so because we want to feel a certain set of emotions.

My point is this: If we can take control of what we are already subconsciously
doing, we will have a better chance of actually being successful, happy,
powerful, strong, disciplined, passionate, or whatever the feelings we hope to
experience from our bodybuilding efforts. We will progress in a clear-cut,
consistent, and structured way-instead leaving the ultimate results up to
chance.

We must not only set specific goals to become the most effective we can be, we
must also determine what must happen in order for us to successful, happy,
powerful, strong, disciplined, or passionate.

It's a tragedy to me when I talk to guys who look so good-but don't think they
do. They may have packed on 30 pounds of muscle in the last year-but are
totally frustrated. They are real "winners" but are feeling as though and are
carrying themselves as big losers.

A couple of weeks ago, I saw an unfortunate example of this. There was this
one gentleman who attended one of my seminars on Ohio. He was obviously really
frustrated-even visibly angry-that he wasn't progressing at the rate he
"thought" he deserved. He explained to me how he has been extremely
disciplined, focused, and strived to learn more about bodybuilding. His friend
even chided in about how this guy would never eat junk food.

This bodybuilder pretty much told me that he thought achieving what he really
wanted from his efforts was simply impossible-and he was mad as hell about it!
It he was bold enough, I bet he would have said to me, "Take that 'Think Big'
stuff, La Cour, and stick it where the sun doesn't shine!"

But, you know what? This guy looked GREAT to me! You could tell that, even
though he was wearing a baggy sweatshirt, he had earned some mature,
high-quality muscle. By the looks of his distinct jaw line, I could tell he
worked hard to stay extremely lean. "Why all the anger?" I thought to myself.
He was "winning" at this game of bodybuilding but was feeling as though he was
"losing".

I simply asked him, "Would you be happy if you gained 10 pounds of muscle and
lost 5 pounds of body fat over the next 12 months?" "Hell, yes!" he answered.

"So, you just want to feel happy about what you are doing, right? You mean to
tell me that, if you gained only 10 pounds of muscle and five pounds of body
fat-and have 12 months to do it, you'd be happy? Does that seem so impossible?
You don't think you can do that?"

He paused for a moment and calmly said, "Well, yeah." My bet is that he
doesn't really even need to pack on all of those pounds and lose all of that
fat to get him out of his overwhelming angst. He just doesn't want to be so
frustrated at something he is working hard at doing. He just wants to be
happy! Simply determining exactly what must happen in order for him to feel
happy and less frustrated will more than likely do the job all by itself.

You MUST set up some "benchmarks" along your journey to feel the way you want.
What events must occur to give yourself the "okay" or your "stamp of approval"
that you can now feel the way you want? What has to happen?

So, you want to feel successful, happy, powerful, or all of the above? Great!
Take the time to figure out all the things that need to happen in order for
you to feel successful, happy, and/or powerful. You don't want to be winning
at this game and feel as though you are losing.

You'll have the best chance of feeling the way you want if you know what must
happen.
