Most dangerous occupations?

As one contemplates emerging trends, one could consider that various careers will shrink and flex due to technological changes etc.

I suspect that photography may become a victim of the ability of people to do their own work.

As one contemplates the possibility of not realizing a significant profit for the aforementioned reasons, as well as other unmentioned ones, one should logically consider other vocations.

The only jobs that ever kept me interested were the challenging ones. Besides, they pay better. I am also an irregular ass kisser so I need to consider working with my brains and hands vs. traditional white collar stuff.

I am thinking that underwater welding might suit me. An aquatic environment would relieve the chronic hip and neck pain that I am currently saddled with due to poor driving decisions by others. The increased risk and specialization also means enhanced pay. Plus I have done enough plumbing and wiring to enhance my abilities.

If you need someone to go 300 feet deep and weld and plumb, you should expect to pay them decently.

Anybody know some deep sea welders?

It pays extremely well if you are willing to go well over 300 feet deep for extended periods. The casualties are also significant. If I thought life was cheap enough to do work in excess of 400 feet, I might consider mercenary work. But life can be good at times.

yea, stay away from the bomb tester job....

Are you sure you can handle pressure at that depth? How far have you ever dove?

I was wondering how my hip would react to the depth. It is very, very hard to find a group dive that exceeds 100' since the groups is only as strong as its weakest link.

Even to hit 100', it was just a dive master and me doing a wreck off of Key West. I love the Keys.

The pressure is six times greater at 300ft, how did you handle 100?

next to an Alaskin crab fisherman,a West Coast Faller is the most dangerous occupation

Some occupations are dangerous because you die if you screw up badl enough. I can handle that.

Other occupations are dangerous because you die if you do it enough. You tangle with nature enough, the odds stack against you.

I should have died so many times that I have room to talk ... and stories to tell. Nobody but nobody has ever wanted to hear more than 3.

Guess I'm a mediocre story teller.

I read somewhere that an Alaskan Crab fisherman (crew on the boat) is the most dangerous job. High fatality rate. From what I'm not sure?

Work in wet, cold and slippery conditions in a rolling ocean. Good chance of dieing if they fall overboard into freezing water in stormy weather. I think.

Drowning, getting washed overboard, etc.

Your mind spends more time in the gutter than most.

Hey...I don't know about you but I would say slowly deteriorating from AIDS is a horrendous way to go.

You want danger, go be a terrorist because I'm coming after you. IMO that's the most dangerous. I have friends on the crab boats up there, a lot of it depends on what boat you are on. I do agree though, commercial fishing is crazy stupid. Those guys have nuts, and the pay isn't really that high these days either. One of my boys I work with used to be a welder, I'll ask him how deep he used to go and get some more info for you.

motorbike pizza delivery guys, live of their tips and risk their lives on the roads making sure a circular piece of dough with topping arrives on time and at the correct temperature, crazy

is a "west coast faller" the forestry stuff out west? If so, my buddy's brother did that... some crazy stories of 2 ton boulders flying over his head and General Sherman-sized tree's swinging out of control almost clipping him

The most dangerous occupation, BY FAR, in the whole world is:

Miner in China

Last year alone, there were over 6.000 mine-related deaths there... those are "Official" stats, so one can only guess the "real" number behind those.

6000 deaths in 1 year... 16 per day

Besides that, I believe the most dangerous job in the US is anything related with a meatpacking plant.

Ever read "The Jungle"? not much has changed...

If your pain really is chronic................this job may not suit you as you will be in akward positions.

As far as your personality--considering one of the biggest dorks I've ever known was a deep sea welder I don't think that would be an issue.

Probably your biggest obstacle would be your welding skills. You just don't go to vo-tech and come out and get one of these jobs. You have to be certified, most often with years of experience. Theres a lot more to it than just making shit stick together.

Years ago I was certified to weld on parts for power plants......which involves taking a cross sample of your work and putting it under a scope. I no longer do that type of work as I don't care to travel and theres not really any of it going on here in town.

As far as danger........we have lost 3 people in the last 6 months---2 from our own local.

Right now most trades are slow........last July they said things were really turning around and would continue till 2015 or so. Well......it took a huge dip a couple months later and we have more guys laid off now than we did before.

As far as ass kissing.......think again. Right now things are very cut throat. No one wants to be the one to loose an 80k job and they will do ANYTHING to make you look bad. It is more work playing the game than the actual job itself.

I have 2 things working for me........1 being I am good friends with the top dog. The other being I don't really have a lot of competition as fare as the actual job is concerned. Of course this hasn't saved me in the past from other companies when the shit ass games begin because I don't play.

The biggest thing working against me: My outfit is small and has been sued for discrimination and has to keep minorities on. So here we are in the middle of the project and because of a lack of work by other trades we can't advance much farther so it looks like a couple of us will get a winter layoff.

Heres the bullshit:

Darcy--woman, worthless(really), and an apprentice. Cheap, can't fire.

Shawn--apprentice, cheap so wont fire even though worthless. Plenty of worthless shit like material hauling to do.

Kevin--apprentice, note above.

Jeff--a worthless fuck made steward. Stewards cant be fired till end of job.

Ted--no good, but over 55 so he's permanet. and mexican

Brian---been with outfit 10 years, works hard but is done. staying.

Cedric-black, really dumb. no explanation.

Fred---mexican. lazy(really). no explanation.

This leaves the only 2 white middle aged journeyman. Not bragging but we are the best 2 on the job but we are slated for termination first.

Bullshit!!!!!!!!!!

And for you union bashers saying see we told you rsnoble..........I still could make more $ including unemployment and benefits have 6 months off per year vs. nonunion. However I am really, really tired of this unfair fucking horseshit and my partner and I have discussed reverse discrimination but just dont think it would get us anywhere except blackballed from the local.

Fuck 'em all.

As far as other careers........id like to get in robotics. Dont like the idea of machine replacing man but when the pendulum swings for me then so be it.

Sorry for the other lengthy post..........waiting on old blue to warn up. It's 8 out, trying to get motivated to go "hit it" as they call it.

Let the games begin.......

China has a terrible record on human rights. If Bush said he was going to invade China for this reason, I might respect his courage and desire to better things for 25% of the worlds population.

However, we have chosen to call China our friends.

I went to the wall and the writing said this: "We call China our friends because they have a huge Army and many nukes. Also, people that are well positioned due to government bribes/cont's. make a ton of money acting as middlemen.

Ahem....being an irregular ass kisser does not make me a dork. It just means I have to slow down..a lot... and concentrate on politics to get promotions. I'm not fond of doing this.

You painted a very ugly picture of the construction scene though I never had any intention of hitting that. I'm an independant. Been one for 12 years.

Get a truck, gear, advertise, do a good job and keep the good accounts.

Besides. a friend of mine has forty 18 wheelers and would like to hire me ( he has asked) if I could weld.

Tboy,

Have any interest at all in the oilfield? I know you are educated and computer literate. Right now everyone is hiring. You could get into directional work without ever having been on a rig before. Building, testing and running MWD tools. Have to be willing to travel and most likely stay out on the rig. But, you would get salary, truck stipend, fuel paid for and a day rate and subtistence. Figure around 14k/per month after training is over.

That is a summary of what you would be doing and just one of many companies that are looking for people.

Sorry-I didn't mean for that to sound like I was calling you an ass kisser. What I meant when I said "think again" was that yes.........ass kissing is a big part of this trade like anything else. The politics are worse........not only can you get challenged on that level but also on a physical one as well.

I thought about getting a truck. Truthfully: I hate driving. LOL-and don't even suggest an airplane I hate flying even more.

I'm interested in this!

How will my 2005 mini van be received by the roughnecks? My E-250 van got totalled by a driver who ran a light.

I have weddings for next summer, then I am totally available!

As for the oilfield, I have studied that some. Once applied to get a Petroleum Eng. degree from Texas A&M. They turned me down. My brother was going to pay for it and be oil partners I thought.

I was encouraged to be an engineer because of math skills but never took one class. I don't like higher math home work as a rule. If engineering courses are required, I'm a tad old to try that.

It is so busy out here as long as you don't mind the work, you can get in. I will pm you contact info to send resumes. Trig is the most you have to know for now, easy stuff. The long hours, stress and people skills are what you need for now. Rednecks and roughnecks are a different breed to deal with. Mostly it is easy. MWD does not require you to stress your hip, body too much.

Thanks!

I've been self employed for 12 years, putting together a resume will be interesting.

Parenthood without a doubt. Having a spouse is a close second. Can't live with or without them. Life's a bitch.

Well, mountain covered oil rigger ... I can add one thing that I know is a) dangerous b) pays well:

The guys who PUT OUT fires in oil wells.

Anything that has to do with bombs and/or pyrotechnics is a pretty specialized field requiring you to put your life on the line and have some college to back it up, ergo mucho $$$ ... of course, when you go, you'll go with a bang ... (in the words of the immortal Webb Wilder).

From today's news.

BEIJING, China (AP) -- A coal mine blast in northern China left at least 74 workers dead, the government said Thursday, marking the third massive coal mine disaster to hit China's disaster-plagued industry in recent weeks.

add 74 more to the list...
