More computer help needed...

K so I have my work laptop working fine, but the problem is that my cable internet provider apparently assigns a static IP address...meaning I can't hook up my work laptop to my cable modem because it's a different IP address.

Any way to assign a new IP address? I really don't want to have to go out and buy a router but if I have to then I will. All I want is to be able to hard wire my cable modem into my work laptop at home. I thought I could just plug it in but apparently not.

Karma for help.

You realize you're dealing with the kind of guy that this makes go "huh?". I have the modem connected - when I try to hard wire it into my work laptop it claims I need a new IP address. How do I create a new connection?

What OS are you running?

Do this for XP

Click on Start --> My Network Places --> View Network Connections --> Local Area Connection (click on that and then hit trouble shoot and it should work)

Play around with it a bit and it should connect.

I have a wireless and I find that the easiest to connect to. Hardwiring is a pain in the ass.
