Monitor question

So I am sitting at my comp and all of the sudden the picture on the screen starts to get very narrow. It does this for abput three seconds then the damn things pops very loudly and lets out a bunch of smoke. Does anyone know what would have caused this? the monitor is only two years old and I do not leave it on all that much. The thing still works perfectly but I have decided to let it spend the night outside, in case it decides to start on fire. It isn't a name brand monitor so my guess is that it is just a poorly made piece of shit.
