Mom told she can't take whey concentrate???

My mother's 'nurse practitioner' told her to stop taking the one scoop of whey concentrate I suggested she have in her yogert each day due to it being bad for her kidneys. My mom has no kidney problems. She is 53 or so.

I suggested she take it because I want her to maintain muscle and because I expect her to start lifting light stuff and biking.

Is this true?

heres a whacky idea, tell her to eat normal food that doesnt have a impact on kidney processing as much as whey does. better to have 1 chicken breast.

Because of convenience and appetite.

Here's a wackier idea - maybe do some research so you don't sound like an idiot or at least present something to back up your claim? It looks like whey is the protein source with the LEAST impact on kidneys.

Research does not support the idea of kidney damage.

As with protein in general, long-term, excessive intake may be associated with deteriorating kidney function and possibly osteoporosis. However, neither kidney nor bone problems have been directly associated with consumption of whey protein.

Bodybuilders frequently consume 300-500g of protein per day for months - even years, yet there is no scientific evidence that this high protein intake causes kidney problems. In other studies, animals with high protein intakes for more than half their lifetime showed no kidney damage.

The kind of dietary protein may also be important. Subjects fed 90 grams of meat protein daily showed a significantly greater increase in GFR (stress on the kidney) than was seen for subjects fed 90 grams of milk protein [CLIN. NEPHROL. 27(2):71-75 (1987)]. By contrast, a study with whey protein [NAHRUNG 42(1):12-15 (1998)] showed no significant effects on liver or kidney function.

*sigh* modern medicine :o

whey protein has been shown to have immunomodulatory properties (in that it enhances immune response due to its IgG, IgA, Beta Lactoglobulin, Alpha Lactoalbumin, lactoferrin (antiviral, antimicrobial resistance)), cholesterol and lipid oxidizing effects, enhanced insulin sensitivity along with weight control effects. Whey, essentially, is probably one of the most beneficial foods one can consume due to reasons above, but also convenience, amino-acid and mineral content profile.

It takes quite a bit of protein to damage the kidneys, 1 g/lb seems harmless from the literature. I think 2.8 g/lb is the threshold?

Poortmans, JR and Dellalieux, O. Do regular high protein diets have potential health risks on kidney function in athletes? Int J Sport Nutr Exerc Metab. 10(1), 28-38, 2000.

you have no idea what your talking about. whey does not have the smallest impact on the kidneys, anything formulated and condensed takes much greater processing then something that is raw due to the structure of the protein and the by product that is attached to the protein. if your happy in ignorance thats all that matters. continue.

Am I the only one confused by Freddy? He says whey impacts the kidneys, then he says it doesn't in disagreeing with me that it doesn't, and then he suggests that it does.

^^ Is this supposed to be a sobriety test? Quite obscure I tell ya :o

Syn, ignore him man. He's not worth it.

Juve, never cease to amaze me with your wealth of knowledge.

The said practictioner probably has no idea what he's talking about. I doubt your mom has anything to worry about man. I've yet to hear anything about it affecting the kidneys adversely...or at all.

I know, but my MOTHER listens to this 'nurse practitioner' before she listens to me.

Fortunately, my sister is a nurse, so I need to get her on my side and she may convince my mom.
