Mom had a heart attack last night

Fuck me!!!

I am still dealing with the death of my g/f and now this!

FUCK!

I come home yesterday morning from running some errands to find many messages on my answering machine, all from my family. It turns out, my mother has been hospitalized due to a severe heart attack. Of course noone had any info as to her condition as she lives an hour away from us. I took the day off work and headed up, with my sister, to see her.

We got to the hospital and found her in relatively good shape, thanks to the morphine, of course. She was coherent and trying to eat, which I figured was a good sign.

The want to keep her in the hospital for a week or so to run tests and monitorher heart and vitals. Apparently, there is still the possibility she could have another heart attack at any time and die. I honestly, don't think I could handle another death this soon.

I also found out, my mother has had another heart attack previously, only she did not realize she was having one. She has had all the telltale signs of this for the past month and kept attributing the pain to other causes. You would think the pain and tingling in her arm would make her think twice and she'd head off to the doctor's office. Damn stubborn old people.

Anyone here deal with a family member who lived after having a heart attack? I know, myself, of people who have lived many years after having one and adopting a lifestyle change. In fact, it means living the way I currently do,with regards to diet and exercise.

Anyone know what the survival rate of heart attack victims is?

Sorry if I rambled a bit, I never got a heck of a lot of sleep last night. Man, this never seems to end. I just want to wake up soon and find everything the way it was a year ago. What a pile of BS life can be.

my dad had one a good 10 yrs ago; he's still as ornery as ever.

That sucks bro!!!

My Dad had a major one 2 years ago where we almost lost him and he is doing great now!

Keep postive! My thoughts are with you.

Damn, I'm sorry to hear that C# :( As if you need the stress..

If I had any info/advice I'd share, but I know very little about it. I hope she'll be okay.

Sorry bro. Looks like she`s in good shape though from what you`re saying. Hopefully that`s the case.

I know many people who had heart attacks and lived for many years after that. It`s a big wake up call for a lot of people to show them they`re not immortal.

good luck to you guys.

As for the heart attack she didnt' know she had, this is quite common.

It is not unusual for people to have little ones that they dont' even realize they had.

After my Dad's my bro went to get checked out due to being nervous about family history and his EKG came back and showed at sometime in his life he had something minor happen.

Help her with any changes in lifestyle she needs to make and I am sure things will turn out great.

Yes, many people suffer heart attacks and still go on years and years living life. Usually they have to take some meds here and there and change up their routines or diet but if she's mentally strong, she'll be fine.

Thanks everyone.

Yeah, I hear people can live for years after having one, or more, heart attacks.

Mom is one stubborn lady too. She already wants to go back home and continue renovating their new house. Don't think my old man will let her for some time to come, but then again, he's not the boss of the house.

you can rebound from heart attacks relatively easily; it's strokes that mess you up afterwords. My pop actually had quintuple bypass surgery. He's retired but he still operates a small family farm with his brother just for somethin to do. I would've planted some tomatoes and called it a day.

Yeah, this is what I figured, but wasn't too sure about.

I know the devastation a stroke can cause and was thankful it was a heart attack instead.

My g/f suffered from many of the same disabilities as a stroke victim due to the anoxic brain injury she had. Not something I'd wish upon anyone.

sorry to hear that about your mum

what theyre going to do is keep her in hospital, monitor some enzymes in her blood associated with heart attacks, keep an eye on her electrical readouts for a while, then take an ultrasound to see how much tissue died. theyll be able to judge severity in a couple of days from now (or so) unless her electrical readouts are so bad that they KNOW that its a severe injury

as for survival afterwards, well it depends on severity, and where exactly the tissue died. my grandfather has had what, 6? 7? heart attacks, 2 of them fairly severe, and he is still going. hogging the tv i might add. good thing i dont watch tv ;)

basically youre not going to get a straight answer for a few days, so try to get comfy. hopefully they dont drug her up too much so you can chat

cheers

My mother had one about 4 years ago and she's still going along well. I've heard that most women don't survive their first one, so I was grateful my mother did.

Yes definitely best wishes on your mom's recovery.
My mom died a few years ago from a massive heart attack. She had the same signs tingling arm, numbness and pain. She told the Dr about it and they wrote it off. She went in for tests a week before her attack and they gave her a clean bill of health.
My dad had one last year and he is doing great now. Besides being really weak for a few months, he is 110% now. We went hunting this year and he was all over the mountain. It was a serious reality check. More like a reality gut check.
Technology has come a long ways man. I really think your mom is going to do great.
Give her a hug for us. Oh yeah, if you are at the hospital late at night, run/walk the stairs. Great way to pass the time:)

Man i'm so sorry for all the tragedy you're going through -- but stay strong and keep yourself together. You have no other choice and it sets the mood for your family as well to follow.

Heart attacks can be scary -- but still better than cancer, and diseases. Meaning it's still preventable in the future. How can you *lower* your chances? Don't take my advice -- ask doctors -- but off-hand, i can suggest enjoying life, changing state of mind, relaxing, being happy, not stressing out. Not doing anything that puts stress on the heart.

She's still there. Her job ain't done yet. Be close to her and make her think of this as a token of how much she is still needed in this world. Leave the stubbornness and enjoy the world and find out the true value of life and friends and family.

I have nothing to offer in the ways of information - except that stress tests are USELESS. I am no doc, but I saw something on TV about the deadly heartattacks (the ones where a blood vessel wall ruptures spilling artery clogging goo into a major vessell totally and very suddenly blocking it) going undetected by stress tests. But about 5 years or so ago they started doing different tests that actually revealed these silent killers, however a lot of insurance companies are giving peeps a hard time about covering them because they are still considered "experimental" even though they are noninvasive and a much better diagnostic tool. I believe it is some sort of sonogram. I'll ask my sister, she knows better and post up if you like.

There is a really high death rate from heart attacks in my BIL's family. No male has lived past the age of 45. My BIL is 40 so my sis constantly hounds him about diet and exersize but more importantly she is constantly looking for the latest info about this topic.

Women have historically been ignored in this regards because our hormones make us "too complicated" to do research on. Breast cancer is NOT the leading killer of women. IT IS HEART DISEASE.

I will post up the info after conferring with my sis.

Positive thoughts for you and your whole family.

Bisous

sorry to hear that about your mom, i hope everything goes well.
i lost my close grandfather to a heart attack a few years ago, and following his death his wife had several severe strokes over a few years time, thank god she is still with us, she is a very strong woman with everything that has gone on in her life. you are in my prayers.
im very happy for you she is still with you.

good info Werd, I would like to hear more.

All members of my Dads side except for one uncle have had heart attacks and/or strokes so it is something my bro and I are always concious of.

Thanks everyone...really. :)

Very interesting stuff werd. I wonder if they're doing these test here in Canada, seeing as insurance companies do not play any role in our medical system? Hmm...

I am going back up there tomorrow, and may spend the weekend, depending on how my Mom's condition is. All I can do now is wait and hope for the best.

Cheers all. :)

LOL.....they are both retired (early retirement) and live in cottage country at the lake.

Maybe she should go back to work. :)

Just a quick update on my mom.

She's still in the hospital, but appears to be doing quite well, all things considered. The doctors believe her heart should heal quite nicely, but have yet to do an angioplasty on her to determine the extent of the damage, so we'll still have to wait a bit to be certain.

She's no longer on morphine and has been disconnected from every machine save for the few which monitor her vitals. She was already arguing with the nurse's about what she can and can't eat. (I don't know if this is a good thing or not......lol)

She should be out of the hospital by this coming Thursday.

All in all, I feel quite relieved after spending the weekend visiting with her.

Tnx again peeps. :) Great bunch of people on this board.
