Modern Sci-Fi readers call-out

Months of focusing on Conn Iggulden / Simon Scarrow Roman Legion adventure fiction I'm back in to Sci-Fi in a big way after reading the Scott Sigler sci-fi novel "Infected".

I'm looking for modern, visceral, techno-thriller / sci-fi stuff similar to the above (& certain Robin Cook novels) or anything along the lines of Jeff Long's original "The Descent" & "Deeper". Anything with zombies & / or apocalypse / world-wide level doomsday type sci-fi material with the survivalist protagonist element also.

Anyone? Think Bino was looking to do a book readers' posse type dealio though I'm not really good at doing book reviews.

For some reason, I never got in to reading scifi; always preferred classics or horror (although I guess R.E. Howard's stuff kinda counts). Still want to try Gaimen, but I've heard mixe reviews.

Who are some good modern scifi writers? I think my pickiness over writing style makes it difficult to find new authors I enjoy.

I read all old stuff, nearomancer, snow crash, anathem, mona lisa overdrive, etc ...

All which are awesome books...

Never read enders game, its arriving friday from amazon, gonna start that series ...

we will see if it holds up to what I have read ...

Greg Bear has some interesting books ...

I need to stop drinking ....

William Gibson's Mona Lisa Overdrive and neuromancer were good and so was Robert Heinlein's Time Enough for Love.
