MMA Diet -- Suggestions...

So I'm fighting Feb 9th, and I need to cut to 155 (from 175). I want to keep all of my muscle obviously. What should I be eating? I've never done a diet before. How do I go about building a good diet?

I'd appreciate any help I can get, thanks

Edit: If you need more info to help me please let me know :)

Well, you have a bunch of time so I'd do it somewhat slowly..replace your current foods with clean, whole foods such as:

yams
potatoes
whole wheat pasta
oats
greenish vegetables
chicken
lean beef
lean turkey

healthy fats (nuts, fish oil, olive oil, flax seed, etc)

make sure you have a relative idea of how much energy you expend as that will determine how much you eat. Training for various forms of fighting is intense, so keep that in mind when determining those caloric needs..

I'd say don't dip below 2500..and be easy on extra cardio if you are hitting bags, jumping rope, running, etc within your current training

What time is the weigh in? Same day or the day before? Is the max for the weight class 155?

20 pounds is 11% of your bodyweight. I'm assuming as a fighter ur in good condition, and probably have b.f., 8-12. I hate to say it but if your b.f., is below 15, 155 is not going to happen without losing LBM

Same day, 3:30, fight is at 7:00. Yes, 155 is.

Thanks all,
Alex

Well then it's a bit harder. If you have fat to lose, it's very doable. Just cut out all the shit in your diet (sugar, processed carbs, junk food, pizza etc.) and eat less than what you currently eat. Keep protein intake high and eat carbs around the times you train. You should be losing about a pound a week, if you don't just eat less.

Yeah, I have fat to lose. I've never been on a diet, so I've never ate well. I'm in good shape, but I certainly could stand to drop 20. So should I be eating 6 times a day? I'm completely new to diets, so if someone could lay out a simple one for me, I'd really appreciate it.

Well there are lots of diets, you have to do some reading. Eating 6 times a day is good for appetite control, that's what I do. Very basic diet: Protein intake: 1.5 per pound of lean body weight, fat: 0.5 per pound of lean body weight and adjust the carb intake according to your body type, training intensity and the fat loss rate.

Curious, would the ANPB diet at the top (Mr. X) work? I love the sound of ANPB, I eat loads every day lol

If I do the math right, losing 2 pounds a week, I'd have lost around 24 pounds by my fight. Is there a way to boost the 2 pnds to more a week using the ANPB diet?

The diet is ketogenic and just ANPB and whey.

I doubt it is compatible with your training needs

you sure you really have a fight man? not to be a dick but you seem to know very little for someone who has supposedly been training long enough to take a fight. what gym do you train at and why are your trainers not guiding you through this? also...what's the event? i've never heard of any mma event weighing in on the same day. also...if you really are a fighter then you should know that by fight time you should be at least 165-175 (if you weigh in at 155). if you are planning on walking around at 155 then you should be fighting at 145 or even 135 if you know how to cut. whole story sounds fishy.

First off, just let me mention that I SHOULD not have to explain myself when asking for help. However, I will, just because I would hate for people to search for this and think that I lie.

Yes

I've been training in Martial Arts since I was 5, I'm now 19. Not once have I ever competed MMA. I'd love to know where I stated that I had been training to fight in MMA. Please, enlighten me.

I will not name the school. I really don't want to give out where I live on the internet, do I? My school just started a fight team, so all of us know little to nothing about nutrition, but my instructors ARE helping me; I just wanted a little help from this community, which I figured knew a little more than my instructors. The event? Ruckus in the Cage; Go ahead, google it and find the Weigh Ins for yourself. Oh, wait, you didn't think I was fighting UFC or Pride did you? Haven't you ever heard of small promotions? Where do you think fighters get their start? You may (or may not) know more about nutrition than me, but it's clear you are totally inept when it comes to MMA.

Again, I didn't know this, please refer to the aforementioned as to why.

Alex

wow..congrats..if you really are stepping into the cage then you have to be about the biggest dumbshit to ever do so!

first off..the thread title says mma diet and you are clearly fighting an mma fight (if what you say is true) so i would fucking hope your dumb ass would be training some mma. word of advice..leave your tkd and tma's at home and start doing some real training now! unless you have some bad ass muay thai with a sick sprawl, sounds like their matchmaker is feeding you to someone...YOUR FUCKED!

as far as knowing about mma..i have had many of my training partners step into the ring/cage over the years. i have personally been to more small events than you have even heard of. i'm 33 and you can rest assured that i was into mma when you were still shittin' green kid. i walk at a lean 185 and will be fighting at 170 because i do know a lot about proper nutrition and cutting weight. also just to point out...you owned yourself pretty bad by admitting that you don't even know that fighters cut down to the weight that they fight at.

take some advice from someone that is older and much wiser.....if you really are planning on fighting then learn what it takes to be a fighter first. if you feel that you can walk at 150 and can fight lower, but are walking at the weight you claim, then you need to think about training a little harder dough boy. good luck and please keep us posted on the results:)

oh and one last note...if you really are fighting then you should be interested in promoting your fight and not trying to keep everything such a big secret. what is your name and who are you fighting? if i find out you really are fighting i will honestly feel bad for you and will be more than happy to give you advice. until that time comes you are just another troll......

I was going to write a long winded reply to this; but it's really trivial. I'll be brief.

I never owned myself, I started the thread asking how to cut weight. Yet somehow you get the notion that I didn't know fighters cut weight. Where did you get that idea?

I never once asked about the fighting aspect of training. I already stated that I've been training in Martial Arts 14 years, I can handle myself in the ring.

I never asked to be called fat, I never asked to be called a liar. Yet somehow I get tagged as a troll. All I ever asked for was help on an aspect that I haven't gotten down yet. So please, do me a favor, if you're are as old and wise as you claim to be, then you surely have gained the respect attribute. Use it. Help me or don't, but don't grasp at straws to offend me, because I still welcome your help if you wish to give it to me.

If you wish to still write and offend me then I can't really stop you. So go ahead and I won't reply, you can say anything you want and I hope you make yourself feel better and smarter for it.

However like I mentioned if you want to help me, I welcome it. What could I do? Any advice you could give me on DIET would be very useful.

Thanks,
Alex

not trying to be a dick man but i'm actually going to post some stuff to help you because i feel bad for you. i honestly don't think you know what you are getting into. if you don't train mma what tma do you train? i am not trying to make fun of you...i am really curious...really hope for your sake it's bjj...muay thai..or at least jkd.

here are a couple of good links:

http://tinyurl.com/28vudd

www.grapplearts.com/How-to-Cut-Weight.html

below is from pro fighter Brian McLaughlin:

One week out from weigh-ins:

I cut my carbs (carbohydrates hold four times their weight in water) and only eat green vegetables for carbs.

I then Fiber load taking 3 tablespoons of Psyllium Husk (45 grams of fiber) daily. Fiber helps you store less waste in your digestive track and I've read that psyllium husk can actually make you pass fat in your stool.

5 days out from weigh-ins I hyperhydrate with 2 1/2 gallons of water for two days (I also increase my salt intake to about double my normal level), then 1 1/2 gallons the next day (at this point I restrict my salt as little as possible), then 1 gallon the next day, then no water (or food) whatsoever 24 hours from weigh-ins.

The idea is that hyperhydrating puts you in a natural diuretic state, by suddenly stopping your fluid intake you lose you water simply by going to the bathroom. Also, sodium makes you retain water, loading up and then cutting down means you keep your sodium levels low and retain very little water.

The night before the weigh-ins I usually take 1,000 mg of dandelion root (mild diuretic) and some senna tea (mild laxative).

The morning of the weigh-ins I usually have a cup of black coffee to help lose the last bit of water. If I am somehow still overweight I take a hot bath for about 20 minutes.

I NEVER get in a sauna or wear a rubber suit, I think anyone who does a substantial amount of heat exposure pre-weigh-in is either in the wrong weight class or did not do their homework on the proper way to make weight.

Post weigh-in I sip on pedialyte cut 2-1 with Smart water. I make sure I down at least 64 oz. of fluids before I eat anything since food slows down hydration.

I also load up on liquid vitamins since I've heard they have a better absorbtion rate and are easier on the stomach. I also take an electrolyte supplement which gives me extra potasium, sodium, iodine, calcium, b vitamins, vitamin c, and some other good stuff.

I then go to town on rice, pasta, bagels, fruits and any other low fiber high carb grain I can get my hands on. I then take a long nap and sleep in the next day to make sure I'm fully recovered.

This is the method I use for all my fights or major grappling events. My last fight I tipped the scales at 156 at weigh-ins and was 168 by fight time. I consider myself a decent size for 155 (below is a post-fight pic)

Awesome info, man, thanks a lot.

Let me set the record straight. I train in a style called Tetsu Shin Ryu. It's a form of Kempo Karate. It's a very strong style for stand up, and I'm working on the side with some BJJ guys. Believe me, I'm more than ready for the fighting portion. All that I'm asking for help on is the diet part.

I think I may have mislead you with earlier post(s). I did not mean that I haven't been training MMA for this fight. I meant that I hadn't trained MMA BEFORE this fight. Up until now, I mostly taught Martial Arts and wasn't training to fight. I in no way meant to say that I hadn't been training for this fight. I hope this makes sense and I'm sorry for the confusion.

Again, thanks for your help,
Alex
