the milk diaries:

No athlete should ever consume any milk unless it's skim milk. Skim milk goes through highly pressurized filtration to remove its milk fat. As a result, much of the lactose and casein factors are also removed. These milk fats and casein act as a blocker in that they coat the stomach and intestinal lining, preventing proper absorbtion of amino acids. This renders the protein incomplete, lacking full amino acid chains. As you can see, whole milk ends up destroying much of its good qualities in the absorbtion process. When the aminos can't be absorbed quickly enough they are rendered useless by the environment in the stomach/intestine. Cottage cheese also contains many of these "blockers" as it is made from the whole milk curd as well and is full of milk fat and casein. Several respected sources have praised cottage cheese as a great protein source for years, unfortunately my findings disagree. =/

In summation, the only milk that is safe to drink is Skim milk. It is more bioavailable because the lack of milk fats and casein factor allow its aminos to be absorbed more effectively.

drop me some input.

The information I read actually seemed to apply to whole and nonfat cottage cheese. That's why I'm surprised... so many people use fat free cottage cheese in their arsenal of diet weapons. If cottage cheese's casein content interferes with the quality of the amino acid uptake, then it is cancelling out it's own effectiveness. I had previously always considered it one of the more complete protein sources I snack on... as it is dairy.

hang on i thought it was the lining that casein provided over the stomach wall that steadily supplied nutrients to the system which made casien blends such a hot thing now... god there's so much contradicting advice out there :(

casein protein is filtered out from teh rest of the gunk when u buy it as a supp. When it's in its raw unfiltered form w/ all the other milk fats and lactose factors, then you're goin ta get tha goo.

Where did you read ythis, I woudl liek to see the study. Of course studies get proven, then disproven real quick, so you never know what is right or wrong. It was just recently thta they pulled whole eggs off the "bad" list of foods to eat and that it really doesn't affect your cholesterol that much. I say if its been working, use it, no study can disprove what works for your body.

I would like to know more about this. Cottage cheese has always seemed to work good for me, but my diet is really varied and I don't eat it everyday. I def wanna know if I may be hindering my results.

IT's not that it would hinder results, it's' just that there is debate as to whether the unprocessed casein allows the aminos to be absorbed in their complete form

true but if I'm counting X amount of protein from my cottage cheese and I'm not getting X amount then thats going to put me under my required protein thus hindering muscle gains, right??
