Mike & Ray Mentzer Found Dead!!!

Steelheart

New member
At the request of Muscle & Fitness, I investigated the facts regarding
the reported deaths of the Mentzer brothers.

Mike was found dead by his brother Ray on Sunday, June 10th, at his home
in Palos Verdes, California, which the two brothers shared. Mike s
death was apparently due to natural causes and his body was taken to a
local mortuary. Mike had been suffering from a number of medical
problems, which may have been complicated by substance abuse.

Ray Mentzer was found dead on Tuesday, June 12th. Ray had also been
suffering from medical problems reportedly liver problems. Although
Ray s death appeared to be from natural causes, coming so close on the
death of his brother it was considered to be suspicious in nature. Ray
s body was taken to the LA Coroner s facility in downtown Los Angeles,
where it will be autopsied.

M&F is working on commemorative articles on both brothers. Anyone who
has any thoughts or comments to contribute can Email them to me.

As much as I love the stuff you guys cant honestly
say that the juice "abuse" had nothing to do with
their deaths!!!!!! I am not saying that its definitely
the reason but it is food for thought, what with
Arnolds heart problem, whos next Louie

Sorry to burst your bubble man, but alot of people who knew Mike personally mention that he had major alcohol problems plus he was self admitted to plenty of rec drug abuse years ago.

That plus he seemed to be a bitter man and the fact that heart disease ran in his family big time as the Mentzer dad's died young too had a factor in this.

I just laugh everytime someone who had died and the fact that they ever used roids all the people come out and scream "roids"

A good example was a good friend of mine who killed himself years ago. When they did the autopsy they found steroids i his system and blamed roids. Yet the funny part was that the guy just lost it because he had quit taking booze and coke about a month earlier, and did not want to handle the reality of his life at the time. of course that didn't show up in his system.

So even though I was not a Mentzer fan, I don't think it is fair to scream "roids" like that when there is evidence of other lifestyle, genetic, and stress(major heart killer) factors involved.

Mike in the 70's

I knew Mike back in 76 when he worked for an old doctor named John Ziegler in Olney, MD. I don't think he was that abusive with the roids back then. 5mg of Dianabol and a weekly injection of Decadurobolin. Ziegler died and Mike went to work for a doctor who used to write scrips in College Park, MD for a lot of the jocks at the U of MD. Mike used to sell full workouts with an electric muscle stimulator for $15 bucks. I didn't bite but did buy one the things for myself. Mike seemed alright to me then, but he was kind of an aloof guy. As big as he was at the time he had the right to feel superior. The first time I ever saw him I though his arm looked like someone's leg. Huge. He and the doc in College Park put out a book on nutrition at one time. Mike then headed west and I heard a lot of bad rumors from the west. I see that doc periodically to get certain items that the average doctor won't supply and from conversations with him I get the impression that they had kind of a falling out. Never knew Ray although he was around in the area at the time. He pissed a lot of people off (Arnold) from time to time, but who doesn't. I do think he cheated out of the Olympia by Arnold, but maybe that's just because I knew him and not Arnold. You always want to see the people you know come out the winner.

Damn this sucks. I was never really a big fan of Mike and knew very little about Ray, but I liked both of them. Mike added interest to bodybuilding and he did have a huge following. But, if you remember seeing any recent pictures of him in the mags, either through seminars or otherwise, he appeared to be in rotten shape. He always looked run down and had a big belly. Still, I think it's a huge loss to the bodybuilding community and my prayers are with his family.
