I wouldn't eat fruit late at night either...too much fructose. The theory here is that you don't need carbs before going to bed - because you're really only laying there (and hence, you obviously aren't active). Having said that, I know some guys who eat plenty of carbs late at night and never seem to have trouble - so go with whatever your metabolism can handle.
Instead of fruit though, I would shoot for a high protein meal that has minimal carbs. Cottage cheese is a good idea....lots of casein which will digest slowly throughout the night while you sleep....
