Menopause remedies???

Hey there. A friend is going through menopause right now. She's 51. Hot flashes, sweats, insomnia, and in particular depression/bluesy type feeling. The last symptom is really bothering her as she says she doesn't feel "right".

Anyone know of any remedies to help alleviate these menopausal symptoms? She knows about birth control and I've already told her about vitex and black cohosh as possible natural alternatives. Anything else?

Thanks!

I wouldn't say she's opposed to estro therapy, she's just never been a pill person. She has looked into it but she doesn't feel she's at that point yet. Do you know of any natural things she can do to lighten the symptoms??

Y_Lifter, she isn't at that point yet thank goodness. She has pulled out the fan though lol.

Wut - may want to try also posting this in the Women's Forum - maybe more ladies will see it that way....I can copy it there if you'd like....

Mine is for now.. Benefits don't outweigh the risks to her.

She's only 43, so its just intermittant pre meno stuff at this time,
mostly just the hot flashes or always hot and mood swings.

Holy crap with the crying for no reason..
Mild anti depressants got her through that

Yeah no kidding with the mood swings and crying for no reason. My friend refuses to go on anti-depressants. Did your wife go on birth control Y_lifter??

No... Again with the benefits vs Risks of hormones.
Also, she has had a partial hysterectomy (uterus) and hadn't had
any issues relating to that or cycles since 2002.

She is dealing with the hot flashes for now and on a low dose of prozac I think for the emotional waves. Seems to be working with a plan to stop
that as soon as she gets past this phase.. Then she will watch the bones.

If she isn't weight training, you might suggest she start to deter bone loss and it may help with her with her blues. Emotions might get even worse when menopause begins to reek havoc on her ability to maintain a decent weight and physique. Weight training may help her combat this to some extent (diet also of course).

I haven't begun menopause yet, but I have no intentions of lying down and accepting what it can do to my body without a fight. With the increased cancer risks, I don't plan to use any homone replacement therapy either, unless it's natural/herbal. Just a lot of weight training and good diet mostly.
