Share some personal photos. My dad served in WWII, South Pacific, Army Corps of Engineers. He is 90 years old. Not much time left for him.
I've heard many stories over the years, but mostly only the ones where he could laugh while telling them.

He was out at sea when Pearl Harbor was attacked. They blacked out and headed to Pearl after they heard. He got there a few days later.
First time I ever visited Pearl was in 2005. My dad told me some of the things he did while cleaning up Pearl.
He took the big guns off the sunken ships and drug them up to the hills to gaurd against future attacks.

My dad has not been back to HI since the war. He has told me a couple times that he doesn't ever want to go back. :(
My mom's always wanted to go. I'd love to take them both in December (week of the 7th)...if I can talk dad into it.

nice! I like the one of you and dad.
My mom flipped out when I wanted to enlist at 17....dad just told her to let me go. He enlisted in the Navy right after Pearl Harbor and served as a corpsman in the Pacific on Tarawa and Iwo Jima. My mother has pictures of him in uniform, his ship and after he passed she put a little shrine dedicated to him that displays his memorabilia and awards in the living room.

Ya know, it's amazing how much stuff my dad just tossed. He went through a lot of tough times and when it was over he didn't want anything to do with any of it anymore. We have almost nothing like what you have.

LOL...I just figured out he was awarded two purple hearts last year. He had a picture of his ship, two of him in uniform, an Arasaka carbine rifle he brought back as a trophy and his aide bag.

My grandfather brought back a 1903 Springfield from his service in WWI as well as his non-authorized .45 caliber colt revolver.

Wow, great thread. I'm sitting here looking at my dad's little paper id thing but it's all I have. He was in Vietnam and actually really enjoyed himself over there believe it or not. He was proud to go!

This is the same as my dad. I know as a medic in the Army he saw a lot of horrific things but mostly told funny stories to us about the locals and the fun he had with his buddies.

look at the bunks on the Missouri those poor guys had to sleep in! My wife is 5'4" and (in this pic) 120ish pounds, and even she thought it was tight quarters. The pic of me didn't turn out as well, but I could barely fit in there (and I weighed a good 15-20 lbs less then)! Kinda makes sense that all the pics you see of guys in any branch of the services back then were all pretty small, skinny guys! ;)

This is the only pic I could find of my dad on my computer. This was Sept. 2006.

They now replaced those ID's with geigh looking CAC cards. I hate upright ID cards.

I hated the old ALICE system, that damned rucksack tore the hell out of your body. I have no idea if the MOLLE system has improved the situation.

We still used rucksacks from the 60's I swear. "My rucksack, my bayonet, my m16, now get on down...". I swear they use them until they completely tear up.
